WHITE CUBE COMPANION (2023)

ロンドンと香港にギャラリースペースを構える「WHITE CUBE」の作品集。本ギャラリーは1993年の設立以来、世界でも評価の高い現代アーティストの作品を数多く展示し、受賞歴のあるモノグラフ、展覧会カタログ、アーティストブックを出版してきた。本書は、ギャラリーとしてだけでなく出版社としても名高い本ギャラリーが、これまで関わってきたアーティストたちの実践を紹介する、ビジュアルエッセイ、講演、対談、詩、寄稿文を収録した年一度刊行シリーズ作の2023年版である。

ゲオルグ・バゼリッツ（Georg Baselitz）による辛辣なマニフェストやシアスター・ゲイツ（Theaster Gates）の俳句といった、あまり目にすることのできないアーティストたちのテキスト作品や、ケリス・ウィン・エヴァンス（Cerith Wyn Evans）、モナ・ハトゥム（Mona Hatoum）、イサム・ノグチ（Isamu Noguchi）にまつわる新たな書き下ろしエッセイ（執筆はアレックス・ベネット（Alex Bennett）、フィロメナ・エップス（Philomena Epps）、トム・ヘースティングス（Tom Hastings）による）が目立つ。

またアーティストたちの特に傑出した一作品に焦点を当てて詳細に解釈を行うテキストにおいては、ロバート・ライマン（Robert Ryman）（コートニー・J・マーティン（Courtney J. Martin）著）やベアトリス・ミリャーゼス（Beatriz Milhazes）（デルフィン・サルド（Delfim Sardo）著）、リュック・タイマンス（Luc Tuymans）（フィリパ・スノウ（Philipa Snow）著）が掲載されている。

あわせて、昨今の政治情勢と芸術がもたらす革命的な力について考察する長編を、ドリス・サルセド（Doris Salcedo）の作品を通してロッド・メンガム博士（Dr Rod Mengham）が、ジュリー・メレツ（Julie Mehretu）の作品を介してT・J・デモ（T. J. Demos）がそれぞれ著し、アントニー・ゴームリー（Antony Gormley）、イブラヒム・マハマ（Ibrahim Mahama）、サラ・モリス（Sarah Morris）は芸術的実践に関する代替的な方法を示すヴィジュアル・エッセイを載せている。

Companion is an annual anthology of art and writings, platforming the practices of artists White Cube has worked with. Visual essays, in-conversations, recorded lectures, poetry, artist writings and newly commissioned texts are just some of the forms of creative expression and discourse brought together in a single volume.
