NAM JUNE PAIK WORDS by Nam June Paik

A bilingual collection of writings and conversations, opening Paik’s Japanese-language legacy to an international readership.
Nam June Paik Words brings together writings, conversations and project proposals preserved in Japanese publications and manuscripts. Drawing on Paik’s long relationship with WATARI-UM, The Watari Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, it includes previously untranslated texts, material from small-circulation publications and previously unpublished manuscripts. Presented in Japanese and English, the book approaches Paik as a thinker and poet as well as an artist.
From Fluxus and experimental music to satellite broadcasting and the internet, these texts explore time, communication and the movement of ideas across cultures. Conversations with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Arata Isozaki and Seigo Matsuoka sit alongside reflections on John Cage and Joseph Beuys. Paik’s humour, wordplay and speculative leaps reveal connections between art, technology and everyday life.
Reproductions of artworks, drawings, correspondence and printed ephemera accompany the texts. An introduction by Etsuko Watari and Koichi Watari, four questions for curator Bart De Baere, a glossary and a chronology provide context and further points of entry. Conceived on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of Paik’s death, Nam June Paik Words offers an encounter with his practice through his own language and conversations.
Japanese/English.
