17世紀・江戸時代前期、八条宮智仁親王とその息子である智忠親王によって京都に造営された「桂離宮」を深く探る一冊。離宮とは皇居や王宮とは別に設けられた宮殿を指し、智忠親王が八条宮家の別業（別荘）として、また後水尾上皇を迎え入れるために木造杮葺平屋で造られた。国外においてはドイツ人建築家であるブルーノ・タウト（Bruno Taut）が称賛し、スイス人建築家、ル・コルビュジエ（Le Corbusier）はまた違う見解を示したことで世界へとその名が広まったことでも知られており、国内では安藤忠雄や丹下健三など、数え切れないほどの建築家にインスピレーションを与えてきた。本書は、詳細な図面、地図、図版や歴史的な分析を通して「桂離宮」を改めて詳細に紹介し、この美しい御殿へとより密に触れられる一冊に仕上げられている。

丹下健三とヴァルター・グロピウスが共同執筆、撮影を石元泰博が手がけた『桂―日本建築における伝統と創造』（造型社、1960年）をもとに、2004年にイタリア「ELECTA」より本タイトルの初版、2005年に同出版社および「PHAIDON」より英語版が刊行、2011年に「PHAIDON」より改めて出版され、本版は2025年版として装い新たに制作された。
