本書では、二者のデザイナーが手がけた美しい装丁を通じて、800点以上のイメージによってアムステルダムの隠された歴史が明らかにされる。
アムステルダムの地下には、ある世界が隠されている。廃棄され、忘れ去られ、覆い隠されてきたもの。数千点に及ぶ考古学的出土品のなかから、二人は選び出し、独自のオブジェ群を構成し、形態、色彩、質感を配することでユニークな連なりを生み、思わずページをめくりたくなる一冊へと仕立て上げた。編纂者たちは、アムステルダムの考古学を独自の視座から捉える。その選択と構成は、アムステルダムの土壌から発見された遺物の豊かさに私的な眼差しで光を当てつつ、オブジェそのものの表現力を損なうことなく際立たせている。その結果、制作者たちは、思いがけない視点から都市の歴史を編み上げる。

Under Amsterdam, a whole world is hidden. Discarded, forgotten, concealed. Selected from thousands of archaeological finds, Irma Boom and Frederik Pesch created a distinct corpus of objects, arranged in a unique sequence of form, colour and texture, making it a real page-turner. The compilers present their surprising view on the archaeology of Amsterdam. The selection and composition of their work shed a personal light on the richness of artefacts from the Amsterdam soil, leaving the expressiveness of the objects themselves unchallenged. Consequently, the makers compose a city’s history from unexpected perspectives.
