スペイン発、2008年創刊の年二回刊行のインテリア雑誌『Apartamento』。第37号の表紙を飾るのは、アメリカ人詩人、小説家、作家であるアイリーン・マイルズ（Eileen Myles）と、テキサス州マーファに建つ自邸である。

マイルズ自身が「孤独の要塞」と呼ぶ砂漠の拠点が写真で公開されるのは今回が初となる。自伝的小説『Chelsea Girls』（1994年、Ecco刊）の著者であるマイルズは、マネージング・エディターのレイラ・ベニテス＝ジェームズ（Layla Benitez-James）と対話し、マーファとの関連性、ニューヨークとテキサスでの日々の習慣、愛と喪失をめぐる執筆について語る。それは、自身のレガシーと死との関係を巡る率直な省察でもある。アメリカ人アーティスト、フォトグラファーであるコール・バラシュ（Cole Barash）によるポートレイトは、マイルズの住まいと「ライティング・シャック（執筆小屋）」を写し出す。そこは、伝説的なイースト・ヴィレッジのアパートメントを再現した創作のための隠れ家である。

1970年代の終わりから1980年代にかけてイタリアで興った具象絵画の動向「トランス・アヴァングァルディア」を代表する存在であり、エットレ・ソットサス（Ettore Sottsass）の親しいコラボレーターでもある、イタリア人アーティスト、エンツォ・クッキ（Enzo Cucchi）は、『APARTAMENTO ISSUE #36 Autumn/Winter 2025-26』に登場した「Studioli」の共同設立者、アレッサンドロ・チコリア（Alessandro Cicoria）との対話のなかで、安易な分類を拒む。「ローマのアーティストなんてものは存在しない」とクッキは語る。「いるのはただ、アーティストだけだ」と。

ロンドンを拠点とし、パレスチナおよび北アイルランドにルーツを持つイギリス人アーティスト、ロザリンド・ナシャシビ（Rosalind Nashashibi）は、ライターのセルマ・ダッバーグ（Selma Dabbagh）との対話で、自身の芸術を形づくるコミュニティと権力の主題について語る。ガザをめぐるドキュメンタリーから、『APARTAMENTO ISSUE #35 Spring/Summer 2025』に登場したアーティスト、ヴィヴィアン・ズーター（Vivian Suter）を題材とした作品まで、その関心は一貫している。ナシャシビは、映画制作から絵画への移行という近年の変化のなかで、自身の実践におけるリスクの役割について率直に語る。「何かが越境的に感じられるとき、何かが危うくなっており、それが何なのかを見極めなければならない」。

アーティストのルーシー＋ジョルジュ・オルタ（Lucy + Jorge Orta）に関する特集では、夫妻と、家族のスタジオおよび芸術空間「レ・ムーラン（Les Moulins）」の継承を担う息子レオ・オルタ（Leo Orta）に焦点を当てる。フランスの田園地帯にある旧工業施設である同地では、ルーシーの代表作「Nexus Architecture」（1995年）をはじめとするオルタ夫妻の社会的実践に根ざした作品群が、パブロ・ディ・プリマ（Pablo Di Prima）による写真のなかであらためて提示される。

スペイン人映画監督ロドリゴ・ソロゴイェン（Rodrigo Sorogoyen）は、映画プロデューサー、ジコ・ジャッジ（Zico Judge）とともに、ハビエル・バルデム（Javier Bardem）とビクトリア・ルエンゴ（Victoria Luengo）が出演する2026年公開予定の新作映画『The Beloved』について語る。「ゴヤ賞」を受賞した2022年公開映画『理想郷（原題：As bestas / The Beasts）』（日本での公開は2023年）の成功を経て、ソロゴイェンは自らの仕事との関係を見つめ直す。「今、自分の人生のなかで、この分野を本当に続けるべきなのか、本当に続けたいのかを問い始めているところだ」と語りながら、それでもなお追い求めたい物語について明かす。

あわせて、1975年公開のドキュメンタリー映画『グレイ・ガーデンズ（原題：Grey Gardens）』の50周年を受けて、イースト・ハンプトンの邸宅でイーディス・ユーイング・ブーヴィエ・ビール（Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale）と娘のリトル・イディ（Little Edie）とともに暮らしたアメリカ人彫刻家ジェリー・トーレ（Jerry Torre）が、2人の伝説的な人物とともに過ごした日々と、紆余曲折を経て自身の芸術に至るまでの道のりを振り返る。

2025年「ドイツ書籍賞（Deutscher Buchpreis）」のロングリストに選出され、ドイツ語圏の文学賞「マラ・カッセンス賞（Marla-Kassens-Preis）」を2025年に受賞した、ライター、詩人、画家であるジナ・カイヤー（Jina Khayyer）の『Im Herzen der Katz』からの抜粋が、『In the Heart of the Cat』として新たに英訳、掲載される。世紀の変わり目のイランを舞台に、故郷への帰還を描くこの物語は、イランの聖職者体制に対する内在的な不安定さと、語り手が自身の出自の地でジェンダー化された役割を慎重に観察する姿を記録する。「私は自分の足を見る、私の自由の足を。さあ、立ち上がって。」とカイヤーは記す。

Apartamento magazine issue #37 Spring/Summer 2026 launches on Wednesday, May 6. Eileen Myles’ Marfa home appears on the cover, marking the first time photographs of their desert outpost, referred to as their ‘fortress of solitude’, have been published. The Chelsea Girls author joins managing editor Layla Benitez-James for a conversation that spans their relationship to Marfa, their routines in New York and Texas, and Myles’ writing on love and loss—part of a strikingly candid reflection on their own legacy and relationship to death. Exclusive portraits by Cole Barash reveal Myles’ home and ‘writing shack’, a creative retreat that replicates their storied East Village apartment.

Enzo Cucchi, a leading figure of Italy’s Transavanguardia movement and a close collaborator of Ettore Sottsass, resists easy labels in conversation with Alessandro Cicoria, co-founder of Studioli, last featured in issue #36 of Apartamento magazine. ‘There’s no such thing as Roman artists’, Cucchi says. ‘There are only artists, period’.

Rosalind Nashashibi speaks with Selma Dabbagh on the themes of community and power that shape her art, uniting her subject matter across documentaries on Gaza and the artist Vivan Suter, who was featured in Apartamento magazine issue #35. Nashashibi speaks plainly about the role of risk in her practice, part of her recent transition from filmmaking to painting: ‘Whenever something feels transgressive, something is at stake, and you have to find out what it is’.

A double feature on artists Lucy + Jorge Orta pairs the couple with their son, Leo Orta, who is set to take on the legacy of the family’s studio and arts space at Les Moulins, a former industrial site in the French countryside where the Orta’s socially engaged artworks—including Lucy’s renowned Nexus Architecture (1995)—are newly activated in photographs by Pablo Di Prima.

Rodrigo Sorogoyen previews his upcoming film, The Beloved, starring Javier Bardem and Victoria Luengo, with contributing editor Zico Judge. Following the success of his Goya Award-winning The Beasts, the Spanish director wonders about his relationship to his craft: ‘Now I’m at the point in my life where I’m starting to ask myself if I should really continue in this field, if I really want to’, he says, while outlining the stories he still hopes to pursue.

Following the 50th anniversary of Grey Gardens, Jerry Torre, who lived at the East Hampton estate with Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Little Edie, remembers his time with the two legendary figures and his circuitous route to his own art.

An excerpt of Jina Khayyer’s Im Herzen der Katz, longlisted for the 2025 German Book Prize and winner of the 2025 Mara Cassens Prize, is newly translated into English as ‘In the Heart of the Cat’, charting a homecoming in Iran. Set at the turn of the century, the story documents an underlying restlessness towards Iran’s clerical regime and the narrator’s cautious observation of gendered roles in this place of her origins. ‘I look at my feet, feet of my freedom’, Khayyer writes, ‘come, get up’.
