ガイアナ共和国生まれのイギリス人アーティスト、フランク・ボウリング（Frank Bowling）の作品集。2022年10月から2023年4月にかけてアメリカ・マサチューセッツ州の「ボストン美術館（MFA）」で開催された展覧会に伴い刊行された。1966年にロンドンからニューヨークに移住した作者は、抽象絵画が強い力をもたらし、黒人のアイデンティティと芸術実践をめぐって活発な議論が展開されている、流動的なアートシーンを目の当たりにした。その後10年間、作者はこの潮流に没頭し、広く展示や出版活動を行い、5人のアフリカ系アメリカ人抽象芸術家と作者自身からなる「5-plus-1」展を開催した。作者自身の作品は、この時期に、具象的なイメージとカラーフィールドの間の緊張を探り、やがて完全に抽象的な絵画言語へと移行していった。本書は、30点以上の活力に満ちた、変幻自在の作品を図版で紹介し、キュレーターによるエッセイと現代作家によるステートメントを添えて、常に動き続ける作者の旅路に、新たな理解をもたらしている。

When the British Guiana–born artist Frank Bowling relocated from London to New York in 1966, he found an art scene in flux, with abstract painting exerting powerful force and vigorous debates unfolding around Black identity and artistic practice. Over the next decade he immersed himself in these currents, exhibiting and publishing widely, and organizing 5+1, an exhibition of five African American abstract artists plus himself. Bowling’s own work from these formative years explores the tension between representational images and fields of color, ultimately moving toward a fully abstract painterly language. This book reproduces more than thirty vibrant and protean works, accompanied by curatorial essays and statements by contemporary artists, inviting new understanding of the journey of an artist whose work has remained always in motion.
