イギリス人建築家のジャック・セルフ（Jack Self）が主宰する「REAL foundation」刊、「what it means to live today」をテーマにした季刊のコンテンポラリー・カルチャー誌『REAL REVIEW』の第9号。本号のテーマは「END TIMES」。本誌のオリジナルデザインはイギリスの出版社「IN OTHER WORDS」を主宰するデザイン・スタジオ「OK-RM」が手がける。

制御不能な火災や洪水、海氷の融解、海面上昇、大量絶滅、不治の病によるパンデミック、思想や行動による暴力の拡大など、新たな前兆が毎日のように現れている。世界的な不安の頂点におかれているともいえるこの状況に「Real Review」はどのようにポジティブなものを加えることができるだろうか？時間はすべての世界を破壊し、厄介払いをしていく！過去は「異国」となり、その恐怖と喜びは現代の気質によって再構築されていくのである。

本号のテーマである「END TIMES」は、我々の予測や構想を超えた、未来との異なる関係性を探る。それは、活動をしないこと、新しいタイプの受動性と忍耐、世界において我々が存在するという感覚の高まり、集合的な人間性、そして人間以外の生命の価値を指す。

「今の時代はおかしいのではないか？」巻頭で音楽家、活動家である坂本龍一にグッドタイミングの意味についてインタビューを敢行。アーティストのオラファー・エリアソン（Olafur Eliasson）は、我々がより一体感を感じられるような特別な作品を紹介し、作家のウィル・セルフ（Will Self）は、イギリスのカンブリア大学サステナビリティー学教授であるジェム・ベンデルが提唱した「ディープアダプテーション」とその省略についてレビューする。キュレーターのサラ・マクローリー（Sarah McCrory）は、フェミニスト・アーティストのアレクシス・ハンター（Alexis Hunter）の作品を紹介、マルクス主義者の妻たちがいまだに家事をしている理由を考察する。エクスティンクション・レベリオン（Extinction Rebellion）はマニフェストの提示と軍隊召集を、美術心理療法士のクレシダ・ブラザーストン（Cressida Brotherstone）とフォトグラファーのハーリー・ウィアー（Harley Weir）は、アートセラピーとニューロ・ダイバーシティについて、映像作家でありライターのヒト・シュタイエル（Hito Steyerl）は、顔と臀部を識別するために設計されたアルゴリズムを、哲学者のジョルジョ・アガンベン（Giorgio Agamben）は、現代社会についてレビューする。

また、あわせて本号ではフォトグラファーのエイミー・レーマー（Amy Romer）が現代社会における奴隷制度について、本書発行人であるジャック・セルフ（Jack Self）は日本の主婦について論じる。アラビアおよびイスラム学研究者のエリザベス・ケンドール（Elisabeth Kendall）は、イスラム原理主義グループ「ジハード団」における詩「ジハーディー・ポエトリー」について、ライターであり研究者、デザイナーのタマル・シャフリル（Tamar Shafrir）はウィトルウィウスを、ライターのレイヴン・スミス（Raven Smith）はファッションにおける無限のサイクルを、建築デザイナーのゾーイ・リッツ（Zoë Ritts）は「ポップアップ」をレビューする。

New omens appear on a daily basis: uncontrollable fires and floods, melting ice, rising seas, mass extinction, incurable pandemics, and escalating violence of thought and deed. How can Real Review add something positive to this context, at the very climax of our global anxiety? Time destroys all worlds, and good riddance! The past is a foreign country, its horrors and delights recast by the temperaments of our present day.

End Times is about a different relationship with the future, as truly beyond our prediction or conception. It concerns inaction, a new type of passivity and patience, a heightened sense of our own being in the world, our collective humanity, and the value of non-human life.
