カリブ系フランス人フォトグラファー、セドリーヌ・シャイデッグ（Cédrine Scheidig）の作品集。「ヨーロッパ写真美術館（MEP）」内スペース「MEP Studio」にて2023年2月から3月にかけて開催された展覧会に伴い刊行された。本スペースは新進クリエイターを支援するプログラムの一部であり、若手作家がフランスで初めて開催する個展（主に写真展）の場として、作品制作や出版をサポートする。作者は、2021年度の「ディオール・ヤング・フォトグラフィー＆ビジュアル・アーツ・アワード（Dior Photography and Visual Arts Award for Young Talents）」最優秀賞の受賞に伴い作品を展覧した。

受賞作である、パリ郊外のアフリカ系カリブ人の移民を描いた「It is a Blessing to be the Color of Earth」（2020年）と、2022年にマルティニーク島のフォール・ド・フランスで始動した「Les mornes, le feu」という2つの物語の対話にを通じ、作者は2つの領土とその住人の想像力との間にある繋がりを示した。ドキュメンタリー写真とは一線を画し、主観的かつ詩的な眼でフランス本土あるいはマルティニーク島に住む若者たちを見つめる。やわらかな光を浴びる優美で繊細なポートレートや都市風景、静物のディテールは、客観的な視点から見る現実よりもむしろその場の感受性を表現している。作者は自己を発見する過程にある移民の若者たちの個人的な物語を求め、植民地時代の過去、文化的ハイブリッド性、現代における男性らしさ、移民といった政治的主題について考察する場を作り出しているのである。

「ディオール・ヤング・フォトグラフィー＆ビジュアル・アーツ・アワード」は、「パルファン・クリスチャン・ディオール（PARFUMS CHRISTIAN DIOR）」、文化複合施設「リュマ・アルル（Luma Arles）」、「アルル国立写真高等専門学校（ENSP / Ecole nationale superieure de la photographie d’Arles）」が若き作家を発掘する目的で開催しているアワードである。2021年は、審査員長であるトールビョルン・ロドランド（Torbjørn Rødland）をはじめ、ココ・カピタン（Coco Capitán）、ピクシー・リャオ（Pixy Liao）、タイラ―・ミッチェル（Tyler Mitchell）などのフォトグラファーや、アートコレクターであり「リュマ・アルル」の創設者・代表であるマヤ・ホフマン（Maja Hoffmann）、「ヨーロッパ写真美術館」のディレクターを務めるサイモン・ベーカー（Simon Baker）、「パルファン・クリスチャン・ディオール」インターナショナル コミュニケーション ディレクターのジェローム・ピュリス（Jérôme Pulis）らが審査会に名を連ねる。

In a dialogue between two recent series – It is a Blessing to be the Color of Earth (2020), awarded the Dior Prize, which depicts the Afro-Caribbean diaspora in the Parisian suburbs; and Les mornes, le feu, begun in 2022 in Fort-de-France, Martinique – the artist reveals connections between two territories and the imaginaries of their inhabitants. Distancing herself from documentary photography, Cédrine Scheidig poses a subjective and poetic gaze on young people both in France and on the island. Her delicate portraits, details of urban landscapes and still lifes, bathed in a soft light, convey the feeling of a place rather than presenting an objective view of reality. The artist explores the personal narratives of diasporic youth in the process of self-discovery, while opening up areas of reflection on such political subjects as the colonial past, cultural hybridity, modern masculinities and migration.
