南アフリカ人アーティスト、ウィリアム・ ケントリッジ （William Kentridge）の作品集。作者の名作舞台「The Head & The Load」に伴い刊行された。作品を丁寧に見直し、第一次世界大戦中のアフリカ人の物語が音楽、舞踏、文章、芸術の融合を通じてどのように語られたのかを分析した1冊。

美術、パフォーマンス、演劇、オペラを組み合わせ、人道主義的・政治的なメッセージ性のある夢のような作品を30年以上にわたって作り続けてきた作者。南アフリカの政治的状況、アパルトヘイト、植民地主義がもたらした社会経済構造などをテーマにしたインスタレーション、映画、ドローイングも多数発表している。

本書においては、第一次世界大戦中においてアフリカが果たした役割を探るパフォーマンス作品「The Head & The Load」に焦点を当てる。戦時中は100万人を超えるアフリカ人が英仏独軍に動員され、ほとんど何の見返りもなしに危険な状況下で食料や武器を運ばされたという。作者が語ったのは、このように決して日の目を見ることなく栄光を支えていたアフリカ人夫たちの物語である。今となっては研究する人もほとんどいないこの物語を、音楽、舞踏、演技、映像、機械仕掛けの彫刻すべてが混然一体となった舞台で展開し、活人画的手法で演出した。本書では、舞台の写真とテキスト、エッセイ、舞台の補足として作者が特別に制作した作品も見ることができる。

長年、作者とコラボートしてきた作曲家のフィリップ・ミラー（Philip Miller）、ミュージカル・アーティスト、ディレクターのツツカ・シビシ（Thuthuka Sibisi）、ダンサーであり振付師、俳優のグレゴリー・マコマ（Gregory Maqoma）、批評家であり文学者のホミ・K・バーバ（Homi K. Bhabha）、歴史家であり作家、映画制作者のデイビッド・オルソガ（David Olusoga）が寄稿する。

作品には、世界各国の歌手、俳優、ダンサーが出演し、先述したフィリップ・ミラーは音楽を担当。植民地の歴史と現代への影響を再考した、力強く多面的な作品である。2018年にロンドンの「テート・モダン」、ニューヨークの「パーク・アベニュー・アーモリー」、パリの「ラ・ヴィレット・グラン・アール」で上演された。

The book includes photos and text from the performance, essays, and artworks created specifically by Kentridge to complement the play.
