ジャマイカ系イギリス人アーティスト、ハーヴィン・アンダーソン（Hurvin Anderson）の作品集。2023年5月から11月にかけてイギリスの西ヨークシャー州にある美術館「ヘップワース・ウェイクフィールド（Hepworth Wakefield）」で開催された展覧会に伴い刊行された。

理髪店を描いた一連の「Barborshop」を扱う本展では、2006年に制作された初期の習作から今回初公開となる新作に至るまで、初めて本シリーズを包括的に紹介している。シリーズにおいて初作品となる一枚から、2023年春に制作された最新作「Skiffle, 2023」や「Shear Cut, 2023」、未公開のスタジオ・ドローイングやスケッチ、アーカイブ資料など、作者の比類を見ないこの作品群を通じてシリーズ全体を考察することができ、過去15年にわたり作者の制作における実験的なアプローチをこのシリーズが支えてきたことを明確にする。本シリーズ「Barborshop」は、作者がカリブ海諸島の文化との接点を持つための場所として取り組んできたテーマでもあり、自身のキャリアを通じて何度も立ち戻った題材である。

作者がバーミンガムの理髪店を初めて描いたのは、2006年のことであった。15年間、同じ理髪店を様々な方法で繰り返し描き直し、具象から抽象へ、また静物、風景、肖像といった古典的なジャンルを用いて試みながら絵画スタイルを追求してきた。本展および本書「SALON PAINTINGS」は、このシリーズに焦点を当てることで、作者の幅広い実践や、記憶・アイデンティティ・国といった作者にとって主要となる関心を理解するためのレンズとしての役割を果たしている。

Hurvin Anderson: Salon Paintings takes it title from the first exhibition to survey Anderson’s Barbershop series to date, spanning the early paintings and related studies he made in 2006 to major new works presented for the first time with which the series now culminates. It brings together previously unseen sketches and archival material alongside Anderson’s own reflections on this extraordinary body of work published for the first time.

Hurvin Anderson (b. 1965, United Kingdom) is one of the most captivating painters working today. The Barbershop is a subject that Anderson has returned to throughout his career, as a point of connection to Caribbean culture. He has said that ‘In repeating the image, deconstructing it and putting it back together again, the series has also become a meditative exploration of painting itself.’
