イギリスの建築家ジャック・セルフ（Jack Self）が主宰する「REAL foundation」刊、「what it means to live today」をテーマにした季刊のコンテンポラリー・カルチャー誌『REAL REVIEW』の第11号。本号のテーマは「WHAT TO BELIEVE」。本誌のオリジナルデザインはイギリスの出版社「IN OTHER WORDS」を主宰するデザイン・スタジオ「OK-RM」が手がける。

パンデミックによる集団的トラウマは、世界の資本が日常生活の完全な商品化を加速する口実となり、すべてが売り物になっている。愛よりも商品、真実よりもスポンサーのついたコンテンツー これほど多くの人々が現代の生産に対し積極的に参加することを要求した社会は、人類の歴史史上存在しなかった。これほど積極的にマネタイズされた現代社会はなかったのである。

対処法として、我々の多くは、現実から完全に離れ、オーダーメイドの空想やシミュレーションを好むようになった。しかし、目を閉じればモンスターから見えなくなると信じているのは子供だけある。本当にモンスターが実在するのであれば、目を閉じることでむしろ危険性は増すだろう。

物理学者カルロ・ロヴェッリ（Carlo Rovelli）に現代の時間の概念についてインタビューを敢行。哲学者のティモシー・モートン（Timothy Morton）は、人間以外の生命へのラブソングを著した。アーティストのヘレン・マルテン（Helen Marten）は、スクラッチカードの形をした作品で参加。哲学者のヤック・ホイ（Yuk Hui）は歴史とテクノロジーを、建築家のケラー・イースターリング（Keller Easterling）は現実をデザインすることを論じる。経済学者のキアラ・ディ・レオーネ（Chiara Di Leone）はマイナス金利について、「DoMyEssayRight.com」で執筆する匿名のライターは人類学者であるデヴィッド・グレーバー（David Graeber）の著書「Bullshit Jobs」をレビューしている。作家でありデザイナー、ウェブデベロッパーのマイサ・イマモヴィック（Maisa Imamović）は、オンラインショッピングのためのプロダクトスタイリング（クリストファー・ウィリアムス（Christopher Williams）撮影）について、キュレーターであり批評家のガブリエル・デ・ラ・プエンテ（abrielle de la Puente）はLong Covid（新型コロナウイルス感染症の長期的な後遺症）について語る。

The collective trauma of the pandemic has become an excuse for global capital to accelerate the total commodification of everyday life. Everything is for sale. There is more merchandise than love, more sponsored content than truth. No society in human history has demanded so many people be such active participants in producing the contemporary. No contemporary has ever been so aggressively monetised.

As a coping mechanism, many amongst us have decided to check out from reality altogether; preferring to inhabit tailor-made fantasies and simulations. But only children believe that closing their eyes renders them invisible to monsters. When the monsters are real, closing our eyes rather increases the danger.
