アメリカ人フォトグラファー、レイモンド・ミークス（Raymond Meeks）の作品集。作者はかねてよりユニークなハンドメイド特装版を制作することで知られており、この特別版は、サインとシリアルナンバー入りの初版本、表紙にはシルバーゼラチンプリントが貼られている。また、「us two, sitting near」と題されたユニークなドローイングが1枚作品集の中に挿入され、「trumpet vine companion」と題されたミシン綴じの小冊子も付属。このセットが、手作業でイメージを貼ったグレーボードのスリップケースに収められている。（※箱のイメージは複数種類から一種ランダムに選択されます。）

自分の娘が成人し、もうすぐ家を出ること触発された作者は、繊細さと揺るぎなさを同時に感じさせる風景を通じて、我々の暮らす場所が持つ遠心力と、この力がどのようにして私たちを引き留め、遠ざけ、私たちの元へ戻ってくるのかについて考察した。これらの写真の中では雑木林が庭に取って代わり、家々は積み重ねられた枕木の上に乗っている。また電話線と線路は、世界という荒野を歩いていくために私たちが作り上げたネットワークを示唆している。この家庭的な風景の中に時折顔を出す娘のポートレイトには、大人になったばかりの時期に特有の内省的な心情や好奇心が写し出されている一方で、被写体の意識という究極の謎への敬意が感じられる。前作「ciprian honey cathedral」の成果を受けた今回の写真集は、「家」と、薄明りの中に消えゆくにつれて益々力強くなる、私たちを家に結び付けている「絆」についての簡潔で詩的な考察になっている。

Inspired by his daughter’s entrance into adulthood and her imminent departure from home, Raymond Meeks studies the centrifugal forces of the places we live – how they anchor us, repel us, and return to us – through scenes that appear both fragile and immovable. In these photographs, gardens give way to thicket, houses are suspended on stacked railroad ties, and telephone wires and train lines suggest the networks we build to find our way through the world’s wilderness.

Among these domestic landscapes are portraits of Meeks’ daughter, which capture the introspection and inquisitiveness of early adulthood while paying tribute to the ultimate mystery of their subject’s consciousness. Following the success of Meeks’ previous book, ciprian honey cathedral, Somersault is a concise, poetic reflection on home and the ties that bind us to it — all the stronger as they fade into the half-light.

Raymond Meeks is renowned for his exquisite handmade books self-published in small editions. To accompany the trade edition of our new book, Meeks will produce a special edition of Somersault titled The things of the world are true in his studio in upstate New York.

The special edition will comprise a signed and numbered copy of the first printing of the book, with a silver gelatin print (printed by Meeks) hand tipped-in to the front cover. Also included will be a unique drawing, titled us two, sitting near, inserted into the back endpaper; a singer sewn booklet, titled trumpet vine companion; all housed in a greyboard slipcase, gessoed with unique hand-applied repurposed paper.
