スカンジナビア発、年二回刊行のインテリア雑誌『ARK JOURNAL』の第9号。世界中の美しい住居とそこに住む人々の物語は、空間がただ美しい家具やアートを置くこと以上に哲学やパーソナリティの表現であることがわかる。2019年にデンマークの有名インテリア雑誌のエディター、スタイリストを長年勤めるメッテ・バーフォード（Mette Barfod）が創刊した本誌は「私たちの周りの空間、そこに置くオブジェクト、そのオブジェクトの作り手」をテーマにしている。建築、デザイン、アートの相互作用にスカンジナビアの価値観や美学を通してフォーカスする。毎号4種類の表紙が用意されている。

本号は、「すでにそこにあるものは何か」という問いを起点に、新しいプロジェクトや改修、修復、増築に関わる創造性やそこに伴う努力について考察する。

はじめに、コペンハーゲンの豊かな建築遺産を掘り下げる。コペンハーゲンのアパートメントをリノベーションする際、その建築物の魂を大切にしながらも家族の住まいとすることに苦心したアーティストの夫婦を訪ねる。デンマーク人建築家マティアス・メンツェ（Matthias Mentze）によるフォトエッセイは、コペンハーゲン最古の博物館である「トーヴァルセン美術館（Thorvaldsen Museum）」の豊かな色彩、モザイクの床、フレスコ画を捉えている。そのインテリアの中で、アイルランド系アメリカ人アーティストのショーン・スカリー（Sean Scully）による彫刻作品が展示されており、本号ではスカリー氏のインタビューを収録している。また、本号の別冊では、コペンハーゲンを拠点に個人の物語と文化的・歴史的リファレンスとの交差を探求するアーティスト、アルベルト・グロンダール（Albert Grøndahl）の作品を紹介する。

メキシコで「クリマンズット（Kurimanzutto）」という現代アートのギャラリーを経営するカップルは、一連の廃墟を用い、既存の構造を維持しつつ、新旧の調和を図り、屋内と屋外が融合するアートに満ちた住まいに変容させた。

ファニー・バウアー・グルング（Fanny Bauer Grung）とデイヴィッド・ロペス・キンコセス（David Lopez Quincoces）の建築兼デザインスタジオ「Quincoces-Dragò & Partners」では、古いものと新しいものが単に共存するだけでなく、過去と現在を照らし出すことができるという考えを持ち、ミラノの自宅と新しいスタジオでその哲学を実践している。

優れたデザインと建築には、感情を喚起させ、空間の中での体験をより豊かなものにする本質的な力がある。本号では、フィンランドデザインの巨匠、ユルヨ・クッカプーロ（Yrjö Kukkapuro）のスタジオ兼自宅、ジャングルに開かれたオアハカの家、アントワープの透明なペントハウス、ロサンゼルスの質素でありながらも魂のこもったミッドセンチュリーの家など、デザインが物理的にも感情的にも大きな影響を与える住居や空間を紹介する。

A photo essay by architect Mathias Mentze captures the rich colours, mosaic floors and frescoes of Copenhagen’s oldest museum, Thorvaldsen Museum, and a special insert showcases the work of Copenhagen-based artist Albert Grøndahl, a photographer who explores the intersection of personal narratives and cultural and historical references.
A Mexican gallery couple has transformed a series of ruins into a home filled with art that blends indoor and outdoor spaces, maintaining the existing structures and incorporating them into a harmonious blend of old and new.

The architectural and design practice of Fanny Bauer Grung and David Lopez Quincoces believes the idea that old and new can do more than simply co-exist but can illuminate the past and the present and we see this philosophy in action in their home and new studio in Milan.
