イギリス人アーティスト、ジョナサン・モンク（Jonathan Monk）による作品。本作は作者の故郷であるイギリス・レスターにあるデ・モントフォート大学にて開催された同名の展覧会に伴い刊行され、カセットテープに小さなブックレットが添えられた形式を採用したユニークな展覧会図録となっている。作者の作品の特徴として、アート史と自伝を行き来して生まれる相互作用が挙げられるが、本作では個人的な要素がより突出している。展覧会では、作者の家族にまつわる3つの「彫刻作品」– グランドピアノ、祖父の持ち物であった2つの柱時計、バラバラになった人形 – が会場に並べられた。展示された作品は機械仕掛けで動くようになっており、一見場当たり的な意味のない動きで時間の経過を示しつつ、ゴシック的な余韻を孕む。そして自動的にピアノが演奏され人形の目がちらつくたびに人間の存在、気配を示唆する。

The Sound of Laughter Isn't Necessarily Funny is a catalogue in the form of a cassette tape by Jonathan Monk published after the show The Sound of Laughter Isn’t Necessarily Funny held in Monk's home town of Leicester. The catalogue comprises a five panel concertina booklet printed in gold and black with jewel case and prison cassette. In Monk's work there is always interplay between art history and autobiography, in this work the personal takes prominence. Jonathan Monk opened his first exhibition in Leicester, the city in which he was brought up, at The Gallery, De Montfort University. The Sound Of Laughter Isn't Necessarily Funny run from 27 January until 11 March 2017. In this exhibition, three sculptures dominated the space – a grand piano, a pair of grandfather clocks and a dismembered doll that had passed through the artist's family. Each of these was mechanically animated and their actions mark the passing of time in seemingly arbitrary ways. All the objects had a gothic resonance to them. Their animation suggested human presence, as the piano played itself and the dolls eyes flicker opened.
