「THE MAN WHO」というフレーズは、過去1世紀半の間に、物語を語る上で、言葉のあやとしてタイトルに広く使われるようになった。1869年から2023年の間に文学、演劇、映画において「THE MAN WHO」というフレーズを冒頭に用いたタイトル243点をまとめた本作は、この世のすべての中心にいる「男（Man）」が持つ、手段を選ばぬ野心、好奇心旺盛な探究心、胡散臭い権力をむき出しにする。常に活動的で支配的な「彼」は、自らの運命の立役者なのである。「彼」の失敗を示すタイトルでさえも、知識豊富で、力強く、類まれな存在であることへの期待が滲み出ている。本作は、男らしさへの社会の執着をその矛盾のすべてにおいて暴露し、達成不可能な栄光や、「彼」にステージを独り占めされている「THE MAN WHO」の孤独が露呈している。
