本書は、作者に関する初の英語による包括的なモノグラフである。作者の彫刻作品は、人毛、皮革、蝋、動物の血液といった素材をしばしば用いながら、人間と動物の身体をめぐる問題を喚起する。その造形は、内と外、生成と腐敗といった主題を横断し、美と不快のあいだを往還する緊張を孕み、ブラジル先住民の伝統と国際的なポストミニマル・アートとのあいだに形式的連関を見出す。本書は、1980年代後半の初期作品から現在に至るまでの活動を概観し、スケッチブックやアーカイブ資料からの抜粋も収録する。

Solange Pessoa is the first comprehensive English-language monograph on the seminal Brazilian artist. Pessoa’s sculptural work, which often mobilizes materials like human hair, leather, wax and animal blood, evokes issues related to human and animal bodies, vacillates between beauty and abjection and forges formal connections between indigenous Brazilian traditions and international postminimal art. The book surveys work from throughout Pessoa’s career, from her beginnings in the late 1980s through to the present, with selections from the artist’s sketchbooks and archives.
