ナポリのリオーネ・サニタ、コゼンツァのサンタ・ルチア、トッレ・デル・グレーコ。南イタリアには、壁や住民たちの身体に癒えない傷跡が残る土地がある。傷の中には、歴史の記憶と、人々の真実の顔が眠っている。その人々とは、アルフォンソ（Alfonso）、エレナ（Elena）、マルコ（Marco）、ステファニア（Stefania）であるが、それもごく一部にすぎない。同じ地区の出身で互いを知っている者もいれば、そうでない者もいる。彼らに共通しているのは、作者に出会ったという事実である。作者は彼らを追い、カメラを持ち、心をこめて、家庭という親密な場に招き入れてもらった。作者は彼らの日常の生活の一部となることでその日々を描いた。けっして侵入者となることはなく、友人に、兄弟に、信頼できる相手になったのだ。中心部から離れているという点ではなく、むしろ作者は彼らの驚くべき生命力に注目した。新たな命が生まれ、子供が少年少女へと育ち、やがて親になるのを目の当たりにした。そして、別れを告げなければならない時もあった。本書は、愛と孤独、生と死、苦しみと喜び、そしてなによりも、親愛と抵抗を描いた一冊なのである。
