アメリカ人画家、アル・ヘルド（Al Held）の作品集。本書は、ロンドンのギャラリー「ホワイト・キューブ・バーモンジー（White Cube Bermondsey）」で2021年に開催された展覧会「Al Held: The Sixties」に伴い刊行された。戦後のアメリカを代表するアーティストである作者に捧げられた本書は、1950年代後半から2000年代までの作品群を研究した重要なモノグラフである。絵具をふんだんに使った初期の作品群「Pigment」に始まり、作者を象徴するアクリル画の作品群「Alphabet」、幾何学的な「Black and White」シリーズ、そして記念碑的な作品群である平面がダイナミックに連なった後期のキャンバス作品に至るまで、その発展を網羅した一冊である。

他にも、アメリカ人批評家、美術史家で作者の親友でもあるアーヴィン・サンドラー（Irving Sandler）が1982年に行った、作者の50年にわたるキャリアを振り返ったインタビューを収録。アイルランド出身の現代アーティストで作者の元教え子であるマイケル・クレイグ=マーティン（Michael Craig-Martin）は、教師としてどうあったかを非常に洞察的、かつ個人的に語る。アメリカのキュレーター、批評家、画家、作家のロバート・ストー（Robert Storr）は、20世紀のアメリカを代表するアーティストの一人である作者の地位やその役割に関して新たな論文を寄稿した。作者の制作の手法に関し類い稀な知識を持つ、イギリス人美術史家で「アル・ヘルド財団（Al Held Foundation）」エグゼクティブディレクターのダニエル・ベラスコ（Daniel Belasco）は、作者が長年にわたり培った方法論を明らかにするエッセイを寄稿している。

スイスを拠点とする「(Studio) Jonathan Hares」がデザインを手がけた本書は、作者の作品群が持つ大胆な形式、仕上げ方、そして空間的な量感に敬意を表した構成となっている。作者のキャリアを年代順に概観するために、多くの展覧会の展示の様子、制作中の作者を写した親密さを感じさせる写真群も掲載。

本書は2022年、スイス連邦文化局が開催するその年に刊行された最も美しいスイスの書籍に贈られる「The Most Beautiful Swiss Books 2021」を受賞している。

Al Held: Selected Works 1956–2004 is one of the recipients of The Most Beautiful Swiss Books 2021, awarded 2022. 

Published following the exhibition ‘Al Held: The Sixties’ at White Cube Bermondsey, London (2021–22), this major monograph is dedicated to Held, one of the great post-war American artists, and provides a major survey of the artist’s works from the late-1950s to the 2000s. Beginning with his early, paint-laden ‘Pigment’ works, and progressing into the iconic acrylic ‘Alphabet’ and the geometric ‘Black and White’ series, the book culminates with Held’s monumental late canvases of dynamic, interlocking planes. 

The monograph features: Held’s 1982 interview with renowned American critic, art historian and close friend Irving Sandler, which reflects upon the artist’s fifty-year career; a highly insightful and personal account of the artist as teacher by Held’s former student, Michael Craig-Martin; new scholarship by Robert Storr on Held’s status as one of the foremost American artists of the 20^th century; and finally, a contribution by Daniel Belasco, whose unrivalled knowledge of the artist’s working practice illuminates the methodologies Held developed over the decades.

Designed by (Studio) Jonathan Hares, the book honours the bold format, high finish and spatial volume of Held’s artistic output. Presenting generous illustrations throughout, supported by surprising details, the book also highlights many exhibition installations to render a chronological overview of Held’s career, as well as intimate photographs of the artist at work.

Sir Michael Craig-Martin CBE RA is an Irish-born artist and Emeritus Professor of Fine Art at Goldsmiths, London. Irving Sandler (1925-2018) was an American art critic, art historian and educator.
