20世紀を代表するアメリカ人コンテンポラリー・アーティスト、ロバート・ラウシェンバーグ（Robert Rauschenberg）の作品集。2024年4月から8月にかけてイギリスのギャラリー「タデウス・ロパック（Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac）」で開催された展覧会に伴い刊行された。

1984年12月13日、作者は自ら「芸術による平和外交」と呼ぶ「ラウシェンバーグ国際文化交流プロジェクト / ロッキー（ROCI / Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange）」の構想を発表した。そして1984年から1991年にかけて、芸術表現を通じた対話を生むこと、そして相互の異文化理解を達成することを目的とし、大規模な巡回展を開催して世界中を旅していった。1990年までにメキシコ、チリ、ベネズエラ、中国、チベット、日本、キューバ、ソビエト社会主義共和国連邦（ソ連）、ドイツ、マレーシアを巡り、1991年にワシントンの「ナショナル･ギャラリー（The National Gallery）」で最後の展示が開催され、延べ11カ国に及んだ。

「ロバート・ラウシェンバーグ財団（The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation）」よ直接作品を提供され、展示するこの企画は、1991年にプロジェクトが終了して以来、初めて「ロッキー」に特化した調査の発表である。世界的な情勢不安が深まる中開催された本展は、21世紀における国際的なコラボレーションと芸術交流の力について再び考察し、このプロジェクトを改めて検証するものである。

The only in-print book exploring Rauschenberg’s years-long, self-funded initiative to promote cultural and artistic exchange across the globe

The Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange, or ROCI (pronounced “Rocky,” the name of the artist’s pet turtle), was a tangible expression of Robert Rauschenberg’s (1925–2008) long-term commitment to human rights and to the freedom of artistic expression. Funded almost entirely by the artist himself, Rauschenberg traveled to countries around the world often where artistic experimentation had been suppressed with the purpose of sparking a dialogue and achieving a mutual understanding through the creative process. Between 1985 and 1990, the project was realized in 10 countries in the following order: Mexico, Chile, Venezuela, China, Tibet, Japan, Cuba, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Germany and Malaysia, with a final exhibition held in 1991 at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
This catalog is the only in-print publication on Rauschenberg’s ROCI initiative, making it an invaluable text for understanding this important and long-running project.
