キュレーターでありヴィクトリア & アルバート博物館（V&A）写真部門ディレクターであるダンカン・フォーブス（Duncan Forbes）による、アメリカを拠点に活躍したオーストリア人フォトグラファー、リゼット・モデル（Lisette Model）の作品と生涯を巡る評伝的エッセイ。

オーストリア出身のフォトグラファー、リゼット・モデルは、1938年にニューヨークへ渡ると、ほどなくして注目すべき初期の成功を収めた。彼女の写真は著名な雑誌の誌面を飾り、「ニューヨーク近代美術館（The Museum of Modern Art, MoMA）」でも展示された。バーやレストラン、浜辺、街路といった日常の場で捉えられた、ごく普通のアメリカ人を率直に描写するその写真は、写真表現の世界に革新をもたらした。

しかし1950年頃までに、モデルは自身の写真を公に流通させることをほぼやめ、代わって教育に専念するようになる。ダイアン・アーバス（Diane Arbus）やロザリンド・フォックス・ソロモン（Rosalind Fox Solomon）を含む、新たな世代の写真家たちを育てることに力を注いだのである。その過程で彼女は、効率と実務性が重視されるニューヨークにおいて「扱いにくい人物」として知られる存在となり、その評価は時にスキャンダラスなものでもあった。

本書は、豊富な図版を伴うエッセイとして、ダンカン・フォーブスがモデルの写真とその生涯に新たな解釈を提示する。作者は、モデルの反逆的とも言える姿勢こそが、その特異な人生と仕事を理解するための鍵ではないかという問いを投げかけている。
