ウィーンを拠点とするジェネラリ財団（Generali Foundation）は、1988年に、現代視覚芸術の振興を目的として、オーストリアのジェネラリ・グループによる非営利の美術団体として設立された。

本書は、図版を豊富に収録しつつ、オーストリア人のキュレーター、サビーネ・フォリー（Sabine Folie）の指揮のもと、2008年から2014年にかけてジェネラリ財団のコレクションに加えられた収蔵作品を検証する。

フォリーは2008年から2014年まで同財団のディレクターを務めた。同財団は1988年にコレクションおよび展示施設として設立されており、その創設から20年以上を経た時期にあたる。フォリーは、モダニズムの再訪を通じて現代美術に関する新たな批評的議論を喚起する機関としての評価を確立することに寄与した。

本書に収録された論考は、近年の美術史的言説との関係からコレクションを捉え直すものであり、理論家およびアーティストによって執筆されている。そこでは、言語的装置、再現の解体および絵画空間の再編、モダニティを通じて変容してきたアーティストと美術館の役割、グローバリゼーションおよびポストコロニアリズムの条件下における主体と環境の関係、さらには歴史の芸術的処理と記憶文化の生成といった、現代美術の諸主題が考察される。

ジェネラリ財団の所蔵作品は、本書の中で書物という形式の展覧会として構成され、その一部は未公開作品である。また、フォリーのディレクター在任中、芸術的実践およびコレクション双方における重要な焦点のひとつは、「書物」を作品かつメディアとして捉える視点にあった。本書は、コンセプチュアル・アートを歴史化する媒体としての書物を扱うと同時に、複製イメージの増殖と展示形式の変容という現代的状況のなかでモダニティを再検討するという、当コレクションの関心を浮かび上がらせるものである。

This richly illustrated publication reviews the additions to the Generali Foundation collection made under Sabine Folie's leadership between 2008 and 2014.

From 2008 to 2014 Sabine Folie was the director of the Generali Foundation—more than twenty-years after (plus que 20 ans après) the collection and exhibition venue formed in 1988. She helped establish the institution's reputation for generating new critical discussion on contemporary art through revisiting modernism. Reviewing the collection's relation to recent art-historical discourse, the essays selected for the publication, written by theorists and artists, reflect on themes in contemporary art including linguistic devices, the dismantling of representation and the reorganization of pictorial space, the changing roles of the artist and the museum throughout modernity, the relationship between the subject and the environment under conditions of globalization and postcolonialism, and the artistic processing of history and the production of memorial culture.

The artworks in the Generali Foundation, some of which have never been exhibited before, are organized here as an exhibition in book form. Moreover, a key focus of both artistic production and the collection during Folie's directorship was on “the book” as work and medium. The book is not only a topical medium that historicizes Conceptual art, but also a means to place the interests of this collection in focus—namely, revisions of modernity in the context of the contemporary proliferation of the reproduced image and modes of display.
