Dan Graham began as a poet — and he still is one. Although comedy provides a good cover, as these writings bear out. Someone once said, “He’s a concrete Poetry who couldn’t get published.” That putdown obviously misses the point. Graham wanted to publish only on his own terms. He’s called his quasi-sociological articles, para-rock criticism, and editorial montages “inserts”. But the goal is not so much to fit into a distribution system as it is to rub it the wrong way. - John Miller
