イタリア人キュレーターであるバルトロメーオ・ピエトロマルキ（Bartolomeo Pietromarchi）と、ロンドンを拠点とするキュレーターであるアレッサンドロ・ラボッティーニ（Alessandro Rabottini）がイタリアの「MAXXI L'Aquila」にてキュレーションした展覧会の開催（2022年7月から2023年2月）に伴い刊行された。英伊併記。

本展および本書は記憶とメタモルフォーシス（変質・変容）に関する視覚的考察である。タイトル『AFTERIMAGE』は残像を意味し、視覚的な刺激が消失した後でさえも網膜上に残り続ける現象を指す。展覧会では、人間の本質や歴史、イメージに根ざした永続性と一時性・儚さの概念を追求している。また、本カタログでは、展覧会における共通認識としてある目的が凝縮されており、プロジェクトに参加した26人の国際的アーティスト陣によるその目的に向けた芸術的貢献を見ることができる。各アーティストは、専用のテクニカル・シートを通じて丁寧に本書内で紹介されており、目を引くような仕上がりの写真資料によって、より内容が補完されている。このコンピレーションは、美術館のギャラリー空間で繰り広げられていた没入型の体験へと読者を誘い、展示された作品、建築環境、会場が建つラクイラの地の歴史的背景を直感的に連想させる。この旅へと導くのは、2人のキュレーターによる雄弁な言葉であり、「残像」の中で待ち受ける視覚の冒険へ貴重な洞察を与えてくれる。

The publication accompanies the exhibition Afterimage curated by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi and Alessandro Rabottini for MAXXI L'Aquila (July 2, 2022–February 19, 2023). It is a visual reflection on memory and metamorphosis. The title refers to the afterimage, a phenomenon in which a visual stimulus persists on the retina even after it has disappeared.
