イギリス人アートライター、ウィリアム・ピム（William Pym）の作品集。初版は2018年に刊行され、その人気から再版されたものである。本書はブートレグ版であり、アメリカ人アーティストのスティーブ・パワーズ（Steve Powers）による新たなカバーデザインが施されている。（初版のカバーはアレックス・ダ・コルテ（Alex Da Corte）、オリバー・ペイン（Oliver Payne）、カリ・ソーンヒル・デウィット（Cali Thornhill DeWitt）が手がけた。）

本書は作者が20代から30代にかけて執筆した25編の長短様々なテキストを収録する。この時期は、アート界の専門職として活動しながらも、その世界に報われない愛情を抱いていた時代にあたる。収録テキストには、書簡、プレスリリース、インタビュー、新聞記事、ゴシップ欄、講義原稿、ジンに収録されたエッセイ、カタログ・テキスト、回想録の断章、思弁的な詩、哲学などが含まれる。

一部は未発表、または少部数での自主出版にとどまっており、また一部は「アートフォーラム（Artforum）」「メガワーズ（Megawords）」「フィラデルフィア・インディペンデント（Philadelphia Independent）」「ヴィレッジ・ヴォイス（Village Voice）」のために執筆された仕事であり、どのテキストの読者もごく限られた範囲であった。扱われている対象は多岐にわたり、オランダ出身、アメリカを拠点とする写真家アリ・マルコポロス（Ari Marcopoulos）、アメリカで生まれたアニメーション・キャラクターの「ガンビー（Gumby）」、アメリカ出身の俳優リンジー・ローハン（Lindsay Lohan）、モロッコ出身のラッパー、フレンチ・モンタナ（French Montana）、アメリカ出身のアーティスト、ライアン・トレカーティン（Ryan Trecartin）とリジー・フィッチ（Lizzie Fitch）、アメリカ出身のアーティスト、カリ・ソーンヒル・デウィット、アメリカ出身のメディア理論家ポール・ライアン（Paul Ryan）、イギリス、スコットランドで結成されたバンド、「ベル・アンド・セバスチャン（Belle & Sebastian）」、アメリカ出身のジャズ・サックス奏者オーネット・コールマン（Ornette Coleman）、アメリカ出身のアーティスト、ジャック・スミス（Jack Smith）などが並ぶ。

テキストの多くは告白的であり、その語り口はほとんど宗教的とも言える調子を帯びている。作者は本書を若い世代のための批評理論の書であり、同時にアート界における困難で好ましくない時期を継ぎ合わせた、パッチワーク状の回想録であると位置づけている。

‘That Way’ is a collection of 25 short and long texts written in William Pym’s 20s and 30s, a period during which he was an art world professional, in unrequited love with that art world. These texts include letters, press releases, interviews, newspaper copy, gossip columns, lectures, zine essays, catalogue texts, memoir entries and speculative poetry-philosophy. Some of these texts were never published or self-published in small numbers, and some were gigs for Artforum, Megawords, the Philadelphia Independent or the Village Voice. All were read by very few people. Their subjects include, among many others, Ari Marcopoulos, Gumby, Lindsay Lohan, French Montana, Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch, Cali Thornhill DeWitt, Paul Ryan, Belle & Sebastian, Ornette Coleman and Jack Smith. The texts are largely confessional, the voice almost religious in tone. Pym considers ‘That Way’ a work of critical theory for young people, and a patchwork memoir of a trying, unsavory period in the art world.
