アメリカ人アーティスト、ダグ・エイケン（Doug Aitken）の作品集。2017年から2021年にかけて、パームスプリングス、デトロイト、スイスのグシュタードの3か所に設置された屋外インスタレーション作品「Mirage」を紹介し、没入的な感情、知覚の混乱、鑑賞者と風景の融合といった作品の特徴を本として表現した実験的な一冊である。

本作「Mirage」は、米カリフォルニア州パームスプリングス郊外の砂漠、デトロイトの廃業した銀行、スイスアルプスが広がるグシュタード地方で連続して展示されたサイトスペシフィックなインスタレーションである。建築家フランク・ロイド・ライト（Frank Lloyd Wright）の思想に着想を得て、アメリカの郊外に建つようなランチ・ハウス（※註）を全体が反射する鏡面で覆い構成されている。

この家は視覚的なエコーチャンバー現象として機能し、表面の鏡が風景を吸収・反射して実物大の万華鏡になる。ここでは主体と客体、内部と外部、実体的なものとつかの間の存在、心理的なものと物理的なもの、建築と風景といった相反する力が常に緊張関係を保ちつつも、時間や季節の変化につれて移り変わり、変容していく。

作品は生きているものであり、固定された視点や正しい解釈は存在せず、1つとして同じ体験はない。作者は本作について「見る人が作品の中に自分自身の姿を見ることに興味がある」という。またこの作品は、ランドアートの歴史との対話でもある。

コールドフォイル（箔転写）、シルバーの特殊印刷、覆われていない背表紙、蛇腹折りの手作り製本仕様からなる本書は、作者の象徴的なインスタレーション作品を特徴づける没入感、知覚の混乱、鑑賞者と風景の融合を演出しており、作品の空間へ入り込むような体験をさせる仕上がりとなっている。本書は、3回のインスタレーションを記録した写真、ドローイング、本プロジェクトに関連する素材、インタビュー、南カリフォルニアのコーチェラバレーで開催される現代アートの祭典「Desert X」のキュレーター、ネヴィル・ウェイクフィールド（Neville Wakefield）によるエッセイも収録。「ZOLO PRESS」、「JRP EDITIONS」「LUMA財団」との共同出版により刊行された。

Dedicated to American artist, Doug Aitken’s the three iterations of the ‘Mirage’ installation in Palm Springs, Detroit, and Gstaad (2017–2021), this publication offers the reader an experiential book that shares some of the characteristics of the artwork – immersive emotion, disrupted perception, merging of the viewer and the landscape.

A site-specific installation successively exhibited in the California desert outside Palm Springs, a defunct Detroit bank, and the Swiss Alpine landscape of Gstaad, ‘Mirage’ is inspired by the ranch-style suburban American house (informed by the ideas of architect Frank Lloyd Wright) and entirely composed of reflective mirrored surfaces.

A visual echo-chamber, its mirrored surfaces form a life-size kaleidoscope that absorbs and reflects the landscape. Subject and object, interior and exterior, the tangible and the ephemeral, the psychological and the physical, built architecture and landscape : each of these oppositional forces are held in constant tension, yet allowed to shift and transform during the passing of time and seasons.

There is no fixed perspective or correct interpretation. Each experience of this living artwork is unique. “I’m interested in the viewer seeing themselves in the work”, Aitken says about his installation, which also dialogues with the history of the Land art.

This book is conceived as an immersion in the artwork’s atmosphere. It also gathers together never-before-published photo-documentation on the three ‘Mirage’ installations, drawings, and other material related to the project, a comprehensive text by Neville Wakefield, as well as an interview with the artist on the history and evolution of ‘Mirage’ over the years and in its different locations.

Featuring cold foils, special inks, silver printing, and bound as a leporello to reflect on the mirror-like quality of ‘Mirage’, this publication is a limited edition that will become a collectible volume for both art amateurs and book lovers.
