スウェーデン人アーティスト、ヒルマ・アフ・クリント（Hilma af Klint）とオランダ人アーティスト、ピート・モンドリアン（Piet Mondrian）の作品集。2023年4月から9月までロンドンの「テート・モダン（Tate Modern）」で開催された展覧会に伴い刊行された。イギリスにおいて初公開となる作品を収録する本書は、革新的な2人の芸術家に対し、我々の理解を深め、高揚させ、知を刺激する一冊であろう。

2人は面識こそないものの、いずれも自然界との深くてダイナミックな繋がりを感じたことをきっかけに風景画家としてのキャリアをスタートした。二者にとって科学と神秘主義とは、排他的な実戦ではなく、身の回りの生命力を理解するための本質的な枠組みの一部であった。両作家は、自然の根底に宿る構造を探り、芸術と人生に与える意味を探求する手段として、科学と秘教的思想の理解に努めた。

本書は、両者の活動を詳細に紹介している。自然物は原子レベルまで抽象化され、細胞は進化し、分裂することでキャンバスの色彩を拡大し、曲がりくねる茎は螺旋状に天空へと進み、結晶状のグリッドの形が伸びていくことで、無限の宇宙が形成される。

編集は、ナビラ・アブデル・ナビ（Nabila Abdel Nabi）、ローラ・スタンプス（Laura Stamps）、ブリオニー・フェール（Briony Fer）が手がける。

ロンドンを拠点に活動するエジプト人美術史家、アブデル・ナビは、「シカゴ大学（University of Chicago）」で学士、「コートールド美術研究所（The Courtauld Institute of Art）」で修士号を取得。ドバイの「サード・ライン（The Third Line）」にてギャラリー・マネージャー、トロントの「パワー・プラント・コンテンポラリー・アート・ギャラリー（The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery）」でアソシエイト・キュレーターとして従事、本書刊行現在ロンドンの「テート・モダン（Tate Modern）」でインターナショナル・アート部門のキュレーターを務める。

スタンプスは、オランダ、デン・ハーグの「GEM 現代美術館（KM21）」を経て、「デン・ハーグ市美術館（Kunstmuseum Den Haag）」でモダン・アートとコンテンポラリー・アートのキュレーターを務める。アリス・ニール（Alice Neel）、リー・ボンテクー（Lee Bontecou）、ポーラ・レゴ（Paula Rego）、2016年に開催されたコンスタント・ニーヴェンホイス（Constant Nieuwenhuys）『Constant – New Babylon』をはじめとした展覧会やその図録を手がける。

美術史家のフェールは近現代美術に関する著作を数多く手がけており、前衛芸術（アヴァンギャルド）の歴史とコンテンポラリー・アート作品との間を跨ぎ、ゾーイ・レオナルド（Zoe Leonard）、ガブリエル・オロスコ（Gabriel Orozco）、ロニ・ホーン（Roni Horn）、ヴィヤ・セルミンス（Vija Celmins）、タシタ・ディーン（Tacita Dean）などを研究する。2018年に「テート・モダン（Tate Modern）」と「ノルトライン=ヴェストファーレン州立美術館（Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, K20）」にて開催されたアニ・アルバース（Anni Albers）の回顧展では、マリア・ミュラー・シャレック（Maria Muller-Schareck）とアン・コクソン（Ann Coxon）と共同でキュレーションを手がけた。現在は「ユニヴァーシティ・カレッジ・ロンドン（University College London）」で美術史の教鞭を執る。「イギリス学士院（British Academy）」のフェローでもある。

Although they never met, Hilma af Klint and Piet Mondrian shared a deep dynamic connection to the natural world and began their careers as landscape painters. For them, science and mysticism were not exclusive practices, but part of the same essential framework for understanding the life forces around them. Both artists engaged with science and esoteric thought as tools for exploring the underlying structures of nature and how they give meaning to art and life.

The catalogue explores both artists’ practices in rich detail. Natural forms are abstracted to their atomic levels; cells evolve, dividing and expanding the canvas in colour; sinuous stems spiral into the ether whilst the crystalline formations of grids stretch out to form an infinite universe.
