日本人彫刻家である名和晃平の作品集。作者が主宰するクリエイティブ・プラットフォーム「Sandwich」は、サンドイッチ製造工場をリノベーションした建物を拠点と して、2009年に京都・伏見で活動を開始した。ここは、作品制作やプロジェクト進行を担うスタッフが集うスタジオ／オフィスであるのみならず、素材の可能性を実験するためのラボであり、必要な機器や道具を開発する工場であり、制作プロセスに関わる各地の工房とつながるハブであり、学生とアートの現場を繋ぐ実践的な教育システムであり、国内外からのアーティストやゲストが訪れるレジデンスでもある。作者の活動領域が一般的な彫刻家の範疇をはるかに超えて、建築、インテリア、舞台美術、デザイン、ファッション、ダンスパフォーマンスと領域をまたいでいくように、「Sandwich」は、数多のモノ・コト・ヒトの流動によって絶え間なく刺激され、成長・増殖を続けている。 京都の都市部から離れた田園風景の中にあり、すぐ傍には宇治川がたおやかに流れるこの地で、作者と「Sandwich」は数えきれないほどの作品を生み出してきた。その活動は到底1冊で語り尽くせるものではないが、そこに流れる創作のための濃密な時間と空気の一端を伝えることは可能かもしれない。本書に記述、記録されるのは、「Sandwich」が現代美術の領域を超えて、人、街、社会、ひいては世界に影響を与えてきた活動の断片である。

作者と旧知の仲であり、「Sandwich」をよく知る、ニューヨークを拠点に活動するミュージアム・ディレクター、ライター、キュレータのブレット・リットマン（Brett Littman）、日本人インディペンデントキュレーター、ライターの大坂紘一郎、タイを拠点にさまざまなメディアで執筆・活動を展開するアーティストのプラープダー・ユン（Prabda Yoon）による寄稿文と、10年近く協働を続けるフランス系ベルギー人の振付家／ダンサーであるダミアン・ジャレ（Damien Jalet）のインタビューを収録。作者と4人が育んできた友情があるからこそ紡がれる言葉は、パーソナルな部分に言及しながらも客体としての作者とSandwichの本質を紐解いている。また、2009年から14年間の活動の変遷を俯瞰的に論じ、作者とSandwichがアートシーンに与えてきた影響やその国内外における独自性といった、これまで言語化されることがなかった側面を取りあげている。

陽が昇り、月が昇り、また陽が昇る。
その淡々とした繰り返しのあらゆる瞬間に、Sandwichの営みは散らばっている。

それらを集めて眺めてみた時、そこにはどんな1日が広がっているのだろうか?

Sandwich, a creative platform led by sculptor Kohei Nawa, began its activities in Fushimi, Kyoto in 2009, based in a renovated sandwich factory. Sandwich is not only a studio/office where the staff responsible for production and project progress gather, but also a laboratory for experimenting with the possibilities of materials, a factory for developing necessary equipment and tools, a hub for connecting with workshops in various locations involved in the production process, a practical educational system connecting students with the art scene, and a residence for visiting artists and guests from Japan and abroad. Just as Nawa's activities extend far beyond the realm of a typical sculptor to include architecture, interior design, stage art, design, fashion, and dance performance, Sandwich continues to grow and multiply, constantly stimulated by the flow of many things, events, and people. Nawa and Sandwich have produced countless works in the countryside, where the Uji River flows gently by, away from the urban areas of Kyoto. Although their activities cannot be fully described in a single volume, it may be possible to convey some of the intense times and rich atmosphere that have been a part of their creative process. This book describes and documents fragments of Sandwich's activities that have influenced people, cities, society, and the world beyond the realm of contemporary art.

The book includes contributions from three well-informed people who are old acquaintances of Kohei Nawa and who know Sandwich well, as well as an interview with choreographer/dancer Damien Jalet, who has been working with Nawa for nearly a decade. Their comments, which were made possible thanks to the friendship that Nawa and these four people have fostered, make reference to personal aspects, but also reveal the essence of Nawa and Sandwich as subjects. The book also provides an overview of the transition their activities have undergone over the past fourteen years since 2009, and addresses aspects that have never before been put into words, such as the influence Nawa and Sandwich have had on the art scene and their uniqueness both in Japan and abroad.

The sun rises, the moon appears, and the sun rises again. Sandwich’s activities are dispersed into every moment of such calm repetition. What kind of day would unfold when you brought them together to look at what is happening?
