フランス人フォトグラファー、ロマン・ラプラード（Romain Laprade）の作品集。2019年刊行『DISTANCES』、2022年刊行『DISTANCES VOL.II』の続編。「Vogue Paris」や「Holiday」などの雑誌でグラフィックデザイナーとして活動し始めたが、15歳の時に感じた写真への情熱を捨てきれず写真家へと転向。機微に冨み観る者の好奇心を駆り立てる画面を作り出し、一見平凡で退屈なものの細部に焦点を当てることで作者独自のイメージへと昇華している。温かなトーンや構図の感性、自然光を利用したその作品は、Louis Vuitton、Hermès、Saint Laurent、Aesopや Rimowa、Mr Porter、Isabel Marant など多くのブランドともコラボレーションを果たし、それぞれのブランドの魅力を写真で世に伝えて来た。また、デザイナーとしての経験は構図、比率や調和、イメージと空間との関係に対する感覚を磨き、写真作品にも反映されている。

本作では、絶えず増えては発展していく自身の写真が描くヴィジョンをさらに広げ、場所、形、そして光をより深く探っている。直近2年間に撮影された最新作品群の多くに光を当てつつ、アーカイブの中からも抜粋して収録しながら、建築や風景との対話を深め、見逃してしまいがちな美しさを見つけることに長けた自身の直感に忠実でありながら、新たな場所をとらえている。

太陽に照らされた海岸線、見渡す限り広がる砂漠、そして人知れず静寂を守る街の片隅を歩きながら、本作は大陸を渡り、構造と静けさとの間に生じている繊細な関係を写し出している。アメリカ西部からアフリカ、ヨーロッパ、そしてさらに遠くまで、光が面を形作る様や、いかにして儚い瞬間が日常的な場所をまるで映画のような質感にするのか、作者の視線はそこに引き寄せられている。

本書は、作者が写真の世界において無二の声を発している存在であることを改めて実感する作品であり、観る者の歩みを緩やかにし、じっくりと見つめさせ、見慣れているものに新たな視点を与える。

作者は、緻密でありながらも本能的な様子が垣間見える写真言語を構築してきた。空間を、光、色、形といった本質的な要素にまで解体するようにとらえ、それぞれの場所の繊細な美しさを浮かび上がらせている。作者は日常的なものをその目で見ていながらも、まるで異なるものであるかのように、作品を通じて我々に見せるのである。

フランス・パリの老舗ギャラリー「イヴォン・ランベール（YVON LAMBERT）」が刊行する『DISTANCES』シリーズは、長年にわたり撮影されてきた写真をまとめた連作であり、モダニズム建築やブルータリズム建築、つかの間に落ちる影、見落とされがちな空間に対する関心が形になった作品である。3巻を通じ、作者は散漫さや雑念を剥ぎ取るようなイメージを提示し、そこに沈黙と存在感を残す。陽の光が差し込むファサードから閑静なインテリア、広大に開けた風景まで、本作は気づかないままであるかもしれない瞬間を写し取り、観る者がいつもより歩む速度を落とし、新たな目線で空間を見つめるよう促すのである。

Moving between sunlit coastlines, sprawling deserts, and quiet urban corners, Distances Vol. 3 captures the subtle relationship of structure and stillness across continents. From the American West to Africa, Europe, and beyond, Laprade’s eye remains drawn to the way light shapes surfaces and how fleeting moments give everyday spaces an almost cinematic quality.

As with the first volume, Distances Vol. 3 will be accompanied by an exhibition, further bringing these images into physical space. Published by Yvon Lambert, this edition reaffirms Romain Laprade’s position as a singular voice in photography, inviting viewers to slow down, look closer, and see the familiar in a new way.

Romain Laprade has built a photographic language that feels both precise and instinctive. His images capture spaces in a way that strips them down to their essential elements: light, color, and form, allowing the subtle beauty of each place to emerge. He looks at the ordinary and makes you see it differently.

Before committing fully to photography, Laprade worked as a graphic designer for Vogue Paris and Holiday Magazine, experiences that sharpened his attention to composition, proportion, and the relationship between image and space. His work has since been published widely and sought after by brands like Louis Vuitton, Hermès, and Saint Laurent.

His Distances series, published by Yvon Lambert, collects photographs taken over the years, shaped by his interest in modernist and brutalist architecture, fleeting shadows, and overlooked spaces. Across all three volumes, Laprade presents images that strip away distraction, leaving behind a sense of stillness and presence.
