アメリカ人アーティスト、マン・レイ（Man Ray）の作品集。2025年9月から11月にかけてスイスのギャラリー「ラーキン・エルトマン（Larkin Erdmann）」で開催された展覧会に伴い刊行された。本書は作者の芸術と生涯を、これまでで最も包括的に紹介する一冊である。約150点の作品を収録し、それぞれに詳細な解説と充実した情報を掲載する。

展覧会では、作者による162点の作品が紹介されていた。絵画、ドローイング、コラージュ、写真、版画、オブジェなど、初期作品から、この世を去る1976年のわずか1年前に制作された作品まで、その創作活動を幅広くたどることができる。巻頭に収録した論考は、作者およびマルセル・デュシャン（Marcel Duchamp）研究の第一人者として知られるフランシス・M・ナウマン（Francis M. Naumann）が執筆。また、「Man Ray Expertise Committee」の代表を務め、マン・レイ研究者であるアンドリュー・ストラウス（Andrew Strauss）がすべての収録作品に詳細な解説を添えている。

さらに、1988年にエリック・レーマン（Eric Lehmann）が撮影した、パリのフェルー通りにあった作者のアトリエの内外を記録した未発表のカラー写真も収録。現在刊行されている書籍の中でも、作者の芸術と生涯を最も包括的に紹介する内容に仕上がっている。本書に収録された作品を通して、読者は作者の創作を支えた喜びと尽きることのない創造性の一端に触れることができるだろう。

This publication was created to accompany the exhibition, Man Ray, To Create is Divine, 12 September – 14 November 2025 at Larkin Erdmann, Hirschengraben 3, 8001 Zurich.

Larkin Erdmann brings together one hundred and sixty-two works by Man Ray: paintings, drawings, collages, photographs, prints and objects that range in date from his earliest years to works made just one year before his death in 1976.

The main essay is provided by Francis M. Naumann, renowned expert on the work of Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray. Each work is fully catalogued and deciphered by Andrew Strauss, leading specialist on the work of Man Ray and head of the Man Ray Expertise Committee. The book is complemented with a series of previously unpublished color photographs taken by Eric Lehmann in 1988 that document the exterior and interior of Man Ray’s studio on the rue Ferou in Paris. Overall, this book presents the most comprehensive overview of Man Ray’s art and life that is currently available in book form.

It is hoped that in examining the works of art reproduced in this volume, readers can approximate the enjoyment and endless creativity that inspired Man Ray to make them. “To create is divine,” he once said, “to reproduce is human.”
