アメリカ人映画監督で脚本家、フォトグラファー、アンドリュー・ダーハム（Andrew Durham）の作品集。アメリカ人映画監督でプロデューサー、脚本家、女優、ファッションデザイナーであるソフィア・コッポラ（Sofia Coppola）による意欲作となる、2006年に公開された第3作目の長編映画『マリー・アントワネット（原題：Marie-Antoinette）』（日本での公開は2007年）の制作に取り組んだ際、「ヴェルサイユ宮殿」で前例のない撮影許可を得た。そして、20年を経た今なお影響を与え続ける独自の世界観を作り上げたのである。

宮殿でのマリー・アントワネットの生涯を描いたその解釈のもと、「ヴェルサイユ宮殿」は華やかなフラワーアレンジメントやマカロン、象のオブジェで彩られた。同作で「第79回アカデミー賞」にて衣装デザイン賞を受賞したミレーナ・カノネロ（Milena Canonero）が手がけた衣装、マノロ・ブラニク（Manolo Blahnik）の靴、さらにキルスティン・ダンスト（Kirsten Dunst）、ジェイソン・シュワルツマン（Jason Schwartzman）、マリアンヌ・フェイスフル（Marianne Faithfull）、リップ・トーン（Rip Torn）、ローズ・バーン（Rose Byrne）、モリー・シャノン（Molly Shannon）らによる印象的なキャストが作品を彩った。

その制作の一部始終を記録したのが、長年にわたりコッポラの友人であり協働者でもある、本作の作者である。撮影現場の内外から、「カンヌ国際映画祭」でのプレミアまで、制作の日々を写真に収めた。テイクの合間を過ごす俳優たちや、ヘアメイク中の姿、そして現実と映画の魅惑的な虚構とのあわいに身を置く瞬間を捉えている。

本書は、未公開写真を含む貴重な作品群をまとめるとともに、『ヴォーグ（Vogue）』などへの寄稿で知られるライターのキートン・ベル（Keaton Bell）による制作のオーラル・ヒストリー、さらに作者とソフィア・コッポラによる新たな対談を収録する。ソフィア・コッポラの代表作のひとつである本作の制作過程と、その神話的な魅力に深く迫る一冊となっている。
