ヴェネツィアの運河に停泊する船舶用エンジンを、夜の闇を背景に捉えている。船体に付された船名とともに提示されるこれらのモーターは、ヴェネツィアのよく知られた都市風景から視線を転じ、浮かぶ都市を根底で支える、見過ごされがちな原動力へと焦点を移している。ヴェネツィアの家庭で一般的に用いられる再利用布で覆われたこれらの船舶用エンジンは、作者の視線によって、汚れた機械から柔らかく抽象的な彫刻のような姿へと変容する。脆弱さを増す化石燃料時代を背景に、作者のイメージは、都市に対する持続的なロマンティシズムを問い直し、その不確かな未来へと静かに視線を投げかける。

コレクターズ・エディションである本版は、本書『MOTORS』に収録されたイメージと呼応する一点ものの再利用テキスタイルを用い、全長4メートルの赤いロープで手製本された特別仕様に加え、作品『Jacomo 3』のファインアート・プリントを付属する。

The Collector’s Edition of Motors is hand-bound using a four-meter-long red cord that wraps around a unique repurposed textile corresponding to the photographs in the publication. The signed and numbered edition includes a fine art print of the image ‘Jacomo 3,’ limited to 20 copies, plus 3 Artist Proofs.

Motors by Italian photographer Louis De Belle documents resting boat engines set against the nightly darkness of the canals of Venice. Paired with a distinctive collection of boat names, Motors shifts the focus from the city’s celebrated iconography towards the often overlooked driving forces underlying the floating city. Draped in repurposed textiles commonly found in Venetian households, Motors renders the dirty boat engines as soft and abstract sculptures. In the increasingly fragile fossil fuel era, De Belle’s images complicate the city’s enduring romanticism while quietly pointing towards its uncertain future.
