本書は、2020年から2021年にブリュッセルの「カナル・ポンピドゥーセンター（KANAL - Centre Pompidou）」で開催された同名の展覧会の後に刊行され、作者が構想・実行した大胆な大規模学際的プロジェクトを包括的に記録した一冊である。展覧会では「カナル・ポンピドゥーセンター」の空間を活かし、招聘アーティストによる作品やさまざまなコレクションの展示で構成される展示を実施した。作者による多次元的な展覧会を追った、アーティストブックとカタログの中間に位置するといえる仕上がりであり、集団による実験の没入体験をアーカイブ写真と深い対話を通じて再現するように作られた独自のフォーマットが、100人以上のアーティストの作品を通じて作り上げられた巨大な自画像のような世界へと引き込んでいく。

本作は、作者が実施した「カルトブランシュ（白紙委任状）」の実験である。この集団による学際的な展覧会は、「カナル・ポンピドゥーセンター」の「ショールーム」の6フロアを使って9カ月にわたって開催された。また本展は、シトロエンが所有していた1930年代建造のガレージの前面に広がる6,000平方メートルのこの壮大なスペースが改修工事のためにクローズされる前の最後の展覧会となった。

作者が「常に動き続ける多次元的で生き生きとした芸術的な表現」として構想した本展においては、特別にデザインされた大規模なインスタレーションで構成された没入感のある風景の中で、コミッションワーク、グループ展、コンサート、パフォーマンスなど、多彩なプログラムが繰り広げられた。作者の史上最も野心的なプロジェクトであるこの『It Never Ends』は、個展、回顧展、作家の選択といった従来の展覧会の形式とは異なる、よりハイブリッドな体験を提供する。これは先述したように一種の集合的な自画像であり、ホスピタリティ、コラボレーション、友情などのテーマを探求するアーティストにとっては、他者の作品を通じて自分自身を（再）提示する手段でもある。

本展は2020年4月開催を予定していたが、新型コロナウイルス感染症のパンデミックにより延期され、最終的には同年9月に開催され、2部構成で2021年4月まで続いた。展覧会のかたち、アクセシビリティ、反響が変化する一方で、この非典型的なプロジェクトのアーカイブだけでなく、コラボレーションのダイナミズムの続きとなる出版物を作り出す必要が見えてきた。この特別な一冊はそのような経緯を経て、豊かなビジュアルによるドキュメンテーションとアーティストやキュレーターとの深い対話を通じて作者のキュレーター的な実験への没入体験を再現するものとして、ブリュッセルを拠点とするデザイナー集団「Sunny-Side-Up」により構想され、実現した。

Between an artist's book and a catalogue, this publication follows up on John M Armleder's multidimensional exhibition at KANAL in 2020-21. Through archival pictures and in depth conversations, the unusual form of the book is designed to recreate the immersive experience of this collective experiment, and proposes a dive into something akin to a large self-portrait, conceived through the works of more than a hundred artists.

It Never Ends was a "carte blanche" experiment by John M Armleder at KANAL – Centre Pompidou in Brussels. This collective and multidisciplinary exhibition took place over nine months over the six floors of KANAL – Centre Pompidou's "Showroom": a spectacular 6000 m2 space at the forefront of the former 1930s Citroën Garage, made visible one last time on this occasion before closing for renovation.

The exhibition—incorporating a program of artist's commissions, collective exhibitions, concerts, and performances within an immersive landscape made up of a series of specially designed large-scale installations—was devised by Armleder as a multidimensional and lively artistic proposal in constant movement. It Never Ends, the artist's most ambitious project to date, unlike the more conventional formats of the solo show, the retrospective, or the artist's choice, offers a more hybrid experience: a collective self-portrait in a sense, and a way for the artist—for whom issues of hospitality, collaboration and friendship have always been central—to (re)present himself, through the works of others.

It Never Ends was due to open in April 2020. Postponed because of the pandemic, it finally took place in September of the same year, and was organized in two parts, lasting until April 2021. While its shape, its accessibility and its resonance changed, it seemed necessary to devise a publication that would not only be an archive of this atypical project but also a continuation of this collaborative dynamic. Hence, this unusual volume, conceived by Brussels-based designers Sunny-Side-Up, was imagined to emulate the immersive experience of Armleder's curatorial experiment, through its lush visual documentation and in depth conversations with the artist and curators. Put together like two books in a single object, it can be read "in stereo," allowing a subjective and ever-changing course amid the texts and pictures that were produced specifically for it. Featuring an extensive and unpublished interview with John M Armleder, and the works of a constellation of more than a hundred artists.
