アメリカ人建築家、デザイナーであるケン・アイザックス（Ken Isaacs）による作品集。作者の創作活動は極めて個性的なものであり、現代の生活における空間的・環境的な課題に対して根本から覆すような解決策を模索し、従来のモダニズムの定義に挑んでいた。第二次世界大戦後の復興や未来への希望を象徴する「楽観主義」的な考え方を原動力に、モダニズムと科学の進歩がもたらす新しい形態と技術に取り組んだ。その結果、低コストかつ建造が容易であり、幅広い層の人々が設計プロセスに参加できる一般大衆向けの建築形態に生涯を捧げることになった。

生み出されたデザインはすべて、作者が提唱した「マトリックス（matrix）」、あるいは「総合環境（total environment）」というコンセプトに基づいており、3次元のグリッドを用いて構築され、家具と家が持つ複数の機能を統合した「リビング・ストラクチャーズ（Living Structures）」と呼ばれるモデュラー・ユニットを用いている。

本書はその「マトリックス」という概念のもと、モデュール構造を作るためのマニュアルである。持続可能であり、環境に配慮され、柔軟性があり、家具より大きく建築より小さい部屋の容積全体を再構成した、多機能な生活構造をモデュール式で作るというアイデアだ。多様かつフレキシブルで実験的なインテリア、収納ユニット、可変的な小さな家をどのように作るかを本書では解説している。

本書は1974年に「Harmony Books」より刊行されたオリジナル版を再編集、同じサイズで再現したものである。当時先駆的とされたこの建築家のアイデアは、多くの点で現代と強く共鳴し、改めてその哲学に浸る機会を我々にもたらしてくれる。

評論家であり「シカゴ美術大学（School of the Art Institute of Chicago）」で教鞭を執るスーザン・スノッドグラス（Susan Snodgrass）がエッセイを寄稿。1970年代を象徴するようなこの一冊を、本再版において再文脈化している。キュレーターでありアーティスティック・ディレクター、編集者のピエール・オウケ（Pierre Hourquet）と本再編集版の版元である「&: CHRISTOPHE DAVIET-THERY」を主宰するクリストフ・ダビエ＝テリ（Christophe Daviet-Thery）が編集を手がけ、ピエール・オウケがデザインも担当する。
