パリを拠点として活動するスイス人アーティスト、ニエーレ・トローニ（Niele Toroni）の作品集。2015年6月から9月にかけてニューヨークの現代美術館「スイスインスティチュート (Swiss Institute) 」で開催された展覧会に付随する形として刊行された。

アーティスト・ブックと研究書の境界線を曖昧にするような作りで仕上げられた本書は、作者に関してまとめられた本のうち唯一の英語版書籍であり（2017年刊行時）、50年近くもの間に開催されてきた展覧会の記録をまんべんなくまとめた最も包括的な刊行物であると言えよう。絵画に対して我々が抱く理解、解釈を一変させた世代のアーティストの一人である作者は、1966年以来、様々な支持体の面に、絵の具が付けられた50号の絵筆を用い、30cm間隔でその筆跡を残し続けてきた。その一筆一筆に感情的な記録を残すことはしないが、そこには人間による筆致を余すところなく詰め込んできた。不敬でありながらも気高きこの「travail/peinture（work/painting, 仕事－絵画）」シリーズは、永遠に繰り返されていくだろう。

「海は毎日眺めることができる、」作者はこう続ける。「だが同じ海であることはない」。

本書は「スイス・インスティテュート」で開催される展覧会と、それに関連するパブリック・プログラムにおけるコンセプト・フレームワークを取り入れて刊行されるシリーズの一つであり、同シリーズの書籍にはエッセイ、アーカイブ資料、企画の記録、アーティストのポートフォリオ、展覧会のドキュメントを紹介することで、回顧的な文脈を我々にもたらしてくれる。

美術史家のアレックス・ベーコン（Alex Bacon）、キュレーターのヨアヒム・ピサロ（Joachim Pissarro）、キュレーター、ライターであるアニー・ウィッシュマイヤー（Annie Wischmeyer）、キュレーターであり、アーティスト、美術史家であるハラルド・ゼーマン（Harald Szeemann）、そして作者自身によるテキストを収録する。

Blurring the lines between artist’s book and monograph, this volume is the only one in English on Niele Toroni and the most comprehensive in print, relentlessly documenting nearly five decades of his exhibitions. Part of a generation of artists who transformed our understanding of painting, Toroni has applied a paint-covered no. 50 brush at regular intervals of 30 cm to a variety of surfaces since 1966. With each brushstroke he encapsulates the fullness of the human touch without leaving an emotive record. Both irreverent and sublime, his travail/peinture (“work/painting”) repeats itself in an eternal recommencement. “You can look at the ocean every day,” Toroni reminds us, “but it is never the same sea.”

Embracing the conceptual framework of an exhibition at Swiss Institute and its related public programs, each book in the Swiss Institute series adds retrospective context through seminal essays, archival materials, event transcripts, artist portfolios and exhibition documentation.
