ドイツ人アーティスト、ヨゼフ・アルバース（Josef Albers）の作品集。作者は20世紀で最も重要なアーティスト、教育者として知られているものの、詩の作品に目を向ける人はまだ少ないかもしれない。

本書は1958年にオリジナル版が500部刊行され、1961年に第2版が出版された。アメリカ人グラフィックデザイナー、アーティストであり、出版者であるノーマン・アイヴス（Norman Ives）と作者が密に協力し、本書のフォーマットとデザインは作り上げられた。アイヴスは今や伝説的グラフィックデザイナーとして名高いが、作者のもとで学んだ人物でもある。当時は、アメリカ人美術史家、キュレーターであり、「イェール大学（Yale University）」で美術史の教鞭を執るジョージ・ハード・ハミルトン（George Heard Hamilton）が自身の出版社である「The Readymade Press」から刊行した。

この第4版は特別とも言える一冊である。シルクスクリーンで印刷された表紙に半透明のカバーを重ねて初版で用いたユニークなデザインを再現している部分ももちろんだが、さらに重要な点としては、前版の内容をさらにアップデートしたことであろう。ドイツ語、もしくは英語で書かれた詩を新たにフランス語で翻訳し、ドローイングをする時のスピリットに沿うようにレイアウトをしている。また、作者の詩の中から今回初めて公開する作品も加えており、あわせてアメリカ人詩人のアンドリュー・セガン（Andrew Seguin）による評論も掲載。本書を作者の多岐にわたる作品群の中でも特にユニークな文学・芸術作品として扱い、その文脈を解説する。

While Josef Albers is recognized as one of the most important artists and educators of the twentieth century, few are aware of his poetry. Josef Albers: Poems and Drawings was originally published in an edition of 500 copies in 1958, with a second edition in 1961. Albers worked closely on the format and design with now legendary graphic designer Norman Ives. Yale art historian George Heard Hamilton was the publisher under the imprint of his own venture, The Readymade Press.

This special fourth edition reproduces the unique design of these early editions, featuring a transparent slipcover over silkscreen, yet it expands upon its predecessors in important ways. New French translations of Albers’s poems, originally written in German or English, are included and laid out in the spirit of the drawings. An appendix presents a selection of additional poems by Albers—some of them published for the first time—and a critical commentary by poet Andrew Seguin that contextualizes Josef Albers: Poems and Drawings as a unique literary and artistic work among Albers’s wide-ranging output.
