Joan Fontcuberta (1955, Barcelona) is a photographer, essayist, critic and art promoter. He has been awarded the David Octavius Hill medal by the Fotografisches Akademie GDL (Germany,1988), has been appointed Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture (Francia,1994) and has received the Spanish National Prize for Photography (Spain, 1998). Besides his prolific photographic work he has also worked as an essayist, editor and curator, co-founded the magazine Photovision (1980), and the festival Primavera Fotográfica de Barcelona (1982). He has been the artistic director of the Arles International Photography Festival (1996). He has also been teaching in different European and North American schools and universities and now he teaches at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona (Spain).
