フィンランド人画家、小説家、作家であるトーベ・ヤンソン（Tove Marika Jansson）の作品集。すでに絶版となっている2022年に刊行されたスリップケース入りハードカバー版をもとにソフトカバー版として制作された一冊。「ムーミン（Moomin）」の原作小説全9作のアートワーク約500点を時系列順に完全収録する。

第二次世界大戦終戦間近に作者が手掛けた小説 『小さなトロールと大きな洪水 (The Moomins and the Great Flood / 原題：Småtrollen och den stora översvämningen)』（1945年）にて初めて登場したムーミン。以来「ムーミン・シリーズ」として小説やキャラクターは時代を超え世界中で愛されてきた。

本書では文字情報の掲載がなく、作品だけでムーミンのストーリーに登場するキャラクターとその冒険の様子や、ヤンソンの溢れる才能とイラストレーターとしてのキャリアを読み取ることができる。タイトルの『MISCHIEVOUS NATURE』は、登場人物のちょっと変わったいたずら好きな愛くるしい振る舞いと、物語を覆う豊かな自然を描写した世界観を表している。

この世界には、夏や秋や春に居場所がないものがたくさんいてね。みんなちょっとだけ恥ずかしがり屋で、少し変わり者で。ある種の夜の動物、他のみんなとはうまく馴染めない人、誰もいると信じていないような生き物とか。みんな、邪魔にならないように一年中こっそりと隠れているんです。そうしてあたりがひっそり静かになって、一面雪で真っ白になり、夜が長くなって、みんなが冬の眠りについたころ、彼らは現れるのですよ。

Mischievous Nature, all the artwork from all nine of Tove Jansson's novels is back as a softcover edition.

All of the original Tove Jansson drawings and artwork for the nine Moomin novels in one book. No words — just pictures. There are some 500 illustrations presented in chronological order. The illustrations tell their own story; of the Moomin characters and their adventures; and of Tove Jansson's remarkable talent and career as an illustrator. The publisher gave the book the title Mischievous Nature. It relates to the characters' rather irreverent behaviour and to the natural world.

This is lay-flat softback with green linen-textured cardboard cover. Inside there are 288 pages of illustrations and book cover images. Some are printed so big they carry on around the page end and on to the next. 

There is almost no text at all in the book but there is one wonderful Tove Jansson quote from Moominland Midwinter on the reverse of the slipcase.

There are such a lot of things that have no place in summer and autumn and spring. Everything that’s a little shy and a little rum. Some kinds of night animals and people that don’t fit in with others and that nobody really believes in. They keep out of the way all the year. And then when everything’s quiet and white and the nights are long and most people are a sleep—then they appear.
