2020年から2023年にかけて、「ハンブルク現代美術館（Deichtorhallen Hamburg）」、「フォトフォルム・フランクフルト（Fotoforum Frankfurt）」、「FOAM写真美術館（FOAM Amsterdam）」で開催された一連の展覧会に伴い刊行された本書。

『Deponie』は、現代の旧東ドイツ社会における恐怖、怒り、攻撃性といった感情を主題に据えた作者の作品プロジェクトである。その背景には、ベルリンの壁崩壊後の1990年代に旧東ドイツで育った作者自身の記憶と経験が重ね合わされている。また「Deponie」は、ドイツ語で「堆積場／処分場」を意味し、本書ではシュヴェリーン近郊に位置する有害廃棄物処理場を指している。この場所は、かつて東西両ドイツ政府が有害廃棄物の処分を行っていた施設である。

新聞形式を採用した本書は、ベルリンを拠点とするデザインスタジオ「ハローミー（HelloMe）」によって編集、デザイン、出版が行われ、消費性の高い印刷物の形式に新たな生命を吹き込む試みとして構成されている。大判の写真イメージは簡潔なグリッドに配置され、力強く、ほとんどブルータリズム的とも言えるタイポグラフィと対比をなしている。

Deponie, the most recent project by photographer Tobias Kruse explores feelings of fear, anger and aggression in contemporary East German society, reminiscent of Tobias’ own youth, growing up in 1990s East Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The title Deponie (Deposit) refers to the toxic-waste dump Ihlenberg near the city of Schwerin, where both the former Eastern and Western Governments used to dispose of their toxic waste.

The newspaper format publication, both edited, designed and published by HelloMe, breathes new life into one of the most disposable forms of print publishing. The large format imagery is hosted in a simple grid and contrasted by striking, almost brutalist typography. The limited, signed and numbered edition is published on the occasion of a series of exhibitions held at Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Fotoforum Frankfurt and FOAM Amsterdam.
