YOU SEE I AM HERE AFTER ALL by Zoe Leonard

Zoe Leonard’s You see I am here after all (2008) brings together thousands of postcard images of the “great cataract,” Niagara Falls, from the early 1900s through the 1950s. This grand accumulation of viewpoints brings up issues as diverse as human interventions with nature and the function of landscape in inventing American historical narratives, as well as the technological evolution of image reproduction and dissemination.

The publication includes historical descriptions of Niagara Falls by prominent visitors: Father Louis Hennepin (1683/1697), Frances Trollope (1832), Harriet Beecher Stowe (1834), Nathaniel Hawthorne (1835), Charles Dickens (1842), Margaret Fuller (1843), H. G. Wells (1906), and the 1953 film Niagara, written by Charles Brackett, Walter Reisch, and Richard Breen. Also featured is Leonard's text “This is where I was,” compiled from written messages found on postcards of Niagara Falls.
