本書は、映画の主人公チャーリーを演じてアカデミー賞を受賞したアメリカ人俳優、ブレンダン・フレイザー（Brendan Fraser）による導入から始まる。さらに脚本、台本、スチール写真に加えて、作家であり英文学で教鞭を執るピーター・コビエロ（Peter Coviello）によるエッセイと、ニューヨークの劇場「Playwrights Horizon」の芸術監督であるアダム・グリーンフィールド（Adam Greenfield）がモデレートした、映画監督ダーレン・アロノフスキー（Darren Aronofsky）と劇作家サミュエル・D・ハンター（Samuel D. Hunter）による対談を収録。

The Whale Screenplay Book opens with an introduction by Brendan Fraser, who won an Oscar for his performance as Charlie, the film’s main character; it also includes the full screenplay, the original script, a selection of fill stills, an essay by author and English professor Peter Coviello, and a conversation between Aronofsky and Hunter, moderated by Playwrights Horizon artistic director Adam Greenfield.
