オーストリア・ウィーンを拠点とする金属工房「カール・オーボック（Carl Auböck）」の作品集。2024年5月から2025年6月にかけてウィーンの「オーストリア応用美術館（Museum für angewandte Kunst / MAK）」で開催された展覧会に伴い刊行された。

同工房は現在四代目によって受け継がれている。その象徴的なデザインは、今日もなお手仕事で制作されており、そのはじまりの段階から時代を先取りし、世代を超えてオーストリアのデザインに影響を与えてきた。

本書および同展覧会は、戦間期から戦後を中心とした重要な時代に焦点を当てるとともに、実験的であった1980年代にも言及し、その作品をシュルレアリスムの視点から探る。カール・オーボック二世（Carl Auböck II）は、第一次世界大戦後にドイツ・ワイマールの「バウハウス（Bauhaus）」でデザインを学び、象徴的な「オーボックデザイン」を形作った。そして同校でオーボックと出会った彫刻家でありテキスタイル作家のマラ・ウックノヴァ＝オーボック（Mara Uckunowa-Auböck）の作品も、今回初めて紹介される。また、二人の息子は自身の作品において工業デザインの変革的な可能性に焦点を当て、アメリカでの留学や国際的なデザイナーとの協業に触発され、工房に世界的な名声をもたらした。その後、建築家である四代目は、父と共に活動し、「エルメス（Hermès）」や「ティファニー（Tiffany）」とのコラボレーションのためにデザインを手がけた。

本書には、展覧会で紹介される主要作品の写真が新たに収録されているほか、デザイナーであり「ウィーン・デザインウィーク」の共同創設者、また同美術館のディレクターであるリリー・ホライン（Lilli Hollein）が序文を著し、評論家であり教育者のキンバリー・ブラッドリー（Kimberly Bradley）が国際的なデザインの文脈における同工房を論じる。あわせて、工房の歴史を扱うニーナ・シェードルマイヤー（Nina Schedlmayer）、そして同工房の包括的な作品群をシュルレアリスムの視点から読み解くキュレーターのバーベル・フィッシャー（Bärbel Vischer）による文章を収録する。

The iconic designs that are still handcrafted today by the Auböck workshop, now in its fourth generation in Vienna, were ahead of their time from the beginning and shaped Austrian design across generations.

The book and exhibition focus on the defining era of the interwar and post-war periods and also refer to the experimental 1980s. The works are viewed through the lens of surrealism. For the first time, works by the sculptor and textile artist Mara Uckunowa-Auböck (1895-1987), who met Carl Auböck II (1900-1957) at the Bauhaus in Weimar, are also presented.

The book contains, among other things, newly published photographs of the essential, original works shown in the exhibition, as well as a foreword by Lilli Hollein, texts by Kimberly Bradley on the workshop in the international design context, by Nina Schedlmayer on the history of the workshop, and by Bärbel Vischer on the surrealist perspective on the comprehensive oeuvre of the Auböck workshop.
