ドイツを拠点に活動するイラン人アーティスト、ナイリー・バグラミアン（Nairy Baghramian）の作品集。2021年6月にパリの「Galerie and Librairie Marian Goodman Paris」で開催された初個展に伴い刊行された。作者のアーカイブから選ばれた多数のイメージに加え、彫刻的実践を概する美術史家でキュレーターのミウォン・クォン（Miwon Kwon）のエッセイ、作者と、ギャラリーオーナーのマリアン・グッドマン（Marian Goodman）、同ギャラリーのアーティスト & プログラム部門チーフ・エグゼクティブ・ディレクターのフィリップ・カイザー（Philipp Kaiser）との対談も収録。

そのキャリアを通じて彫刻やインスタレーションに併せて大量に制作してきた辺縁的ではあるが重要なスケッチ、ドローイング、模型を、作者は「Side Leaps」と呼んでいる。これらのアイデアは、大規模な彫刻作品のコンセプトの土台になってはいるが、そのまま彫刻作品にすることは意図されていない。「Side Leaps」は、作者自身が制作途中の彫刻とつながりを確立し、同時に批判的な距離を維持する役に立つ辺縁的な作品として存在している。

Marian Goodman Gallery is pleased to release a new publication on Nairy Baghramian, Side Leaps, to coincide with the artist’s first solo exhibition at Galerie and Librairie Marian Goodman Paris, in June 2021. This new volume features numerous illustrations released exclusively from the artist’s archives, as well as a panoramic essay on Baghramian’s sculptural practice by art historian and curator Miwon Kwon, and a new conversation between the artist, Marian Goodman and Philipp Kaiser, Chief Executive Director of Artists & Programs at the gallery.

Over the course of her career, Nairy Baghramian has produced in conjunction with her sculptures and installations a number of significant and peripheral sketches, drawings, and maquettes, known as the Side Leaps. While they conceptually underpin her large-scale sculptural works, the Side Leaps were never intended to be realized as sculptures. They exist instead as peripheral creations, allowing the artist to simultaneously establish a connection with and maintain a critical distance from the sculpture being created.

Published here for the first time in this volume, this utopian and playful body of work offers an intimate and invaluable insight into Nairy Baghramian’s working process.
