THE AMERICANS, 81 CONTACT SHEETS (PAULOWNIA WOOD BOX) by Robert Frank

This book includes reproductions of all the contact sheets for images in Swiss-born photographer Robert Frank’s groundbreaking volume, The Americans, printed using state-of-the-art printing technology and materials. In 1990, Frank donated all the negatives, contact sheets, work and exhibition prints for The Americans to the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The Americans, 81 Contact Sheets was published in the same year as Looking in: Robert Frank's The Americans in 2009. The exhibition was organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of The Americans. The design of the book is by Kohei Sugiura and it was his idea to enlarge the reproductions of the contact sheets from their original size. The first edition was limited to 300 copies (80 copies for folding board box, 220 copies for paulownia wood box) and at first it was made available only to those who had bought a book published by YUGENSHA in accordance to Motomura’s wish. It is also the last book that was born out of the collaboration between Frank and Motomura and published by YUGENSHA.
