スイス人フォトグラファー、クリスティアン・ルッツ（Christian Lutz）の作品集。金融危機、難民問題、経済的・社会的不安、ブレグジット、新型コロナウイルス感染症の大流行とそれに伴う経済的・社会的混乱などを受け、アイデンティタリアン運動（※註）が世界中で台頭している。彼らは人口過剰や社会の衰退など、差し迫った悲惨な状況を宣伝し、恐怖心を煽り、排除と不寛容を生む「常識的」と称する解決策や約束を売りつけている。欧州では、右派ポピュリスト政党の台頭が目立つ。イギリスのUKIP、デンマークのDansk Folkeparti（DF）、オーストリアのFPÖ、ドイツのAfD、スペインのVox、スイスのSVPなど、数え上げればきりがない。作者は、本最新シリーズにおいて、ヨーロッパ中の右派ポピュリストの人々、運動とその地域を撮影した。マスメディアの偏った報道とは一線を画した作者の多層的な写真手法は、党首や支持者の率直なポートレート、集会、ポストインダストリアルな風景、バーや溜まり場などのショットという形で、心の底からの絶望を音もなく絵画的に表現している。

In the wake of the financial and refugee crisis, economic and social insecurity, Brexit, the current coronavirus pandemic and its attendant economic and social upheavals, identitarian movements are gaining ground worldwide. Touting visions of impending doom and gloom, including overpopulation and social decline, they fan fears and peddle purportedly “common sense” solutions and promises that breed exclusion and intolerance. All of Europe is witnessing the political ascent of right-wing populist parties: UKIP in the UK, Dansk Folkeparti (DF) in Denmark, FPÖ in Austria, AfD in Germany, Vox in Spain and SVP in Switzerland, to name just a few. Swiss photographer Christian Lutz has documented right-wing populist people, movements and hot spots all over Europe for his latest series, Citizens. A far cry from the usual polarized coverage in the mass media, Lutz’s multi-layered photographic approach involves noiseless pictorial expressions of deep seated despair in the form of candid portraits of party leaders and followers alike and shots of their rallies, post-industrial landscapes, bars and hangouts.
