アメリカ人アーティスト、シアスター・ゲイツ（Theaster Gates）の作品集。2021年9月から2022年1月にロンドンの「ホワイトチャペル・ギャラリー（Whitechapel Gallery）」で開催された展覧会に伴い刊行された。この展覧会は、粘土（Clay）を使った作品、共同プロジェクト、大規模な彫刻やインスタレーションなど、2005年以降の作品に焦点が当てられている。作者の分野横断的な活動においては、都市計画や陶芸の教育を活かしており、文化コミュニティの創造と美術業界における資本の再循環を推進することを目指した作品を生み出し、それはブラックスペースとイデオロギーの概念について常に考察している。

本書は、ナイジェリア人詩人、ベン・オクリ（Ben Okri）が新たに詩を寄稿しているほか、イギリス人アーティスト、作家のエドモンド・ドゥ・ヴァール（Edmund de Waal）とのインタビュー、アメリカ人学者のモニカ・ミラー（Monica Miller）とイギリス人キュレーターのジョージア・ヘーゼルダイン（Georgia Haseldine）によるエッセイ、新作の映像作品「A Clay Sermon」の記録や本展のインスタレーション写真も収録されている。新たな世代が制作、アイデンティティ、社会活動を通して問いを投げかけている今、作者の作品を深く掘り下げた研究は、時代に適したものであり重要である。

本作は粘土の生産、労働、収集を歴史的に探ったシリーズ「A Question of Clay」の一環である。この連作は、「ヴィクトリア＆アルバート博物館（V&A）」、「ホワイトチャペル・ギャラリー（Whitechapel Gallery）」、「ホワイトキューブ（White Cube）」の各ギャラリーで展開。2022年には、「サーペンタイン・ギャラリー（Serpentine Galleries）」のサーペンタイン・パビリオンで、イギリス人建築家であり王立英国建築家協会の2021RIBAゴールドメダルを受賞したデイヴィッド・アジャイ（David Adjaye）率いる建築事務所「アジャイ・アソシエイツ（Adjaye Associates）」の協力を得て開催された「Black Chapel」にて完結している。

Published to accompany the major exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery in 2021 of Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates (b.1973), focussing on his clay-based work, collaborative projects and large scale sculptures and installations since 2005. Gates' interdisciplinary practice draws on his training in both urban planning and pottery, resulting in work which aims to instigate the creation of cultural communities and the recirculation of art-world capital, all the time considering the notion of Black space and ideology.

Featuring a new poem by Ben Okri, an interview with the artist by Edmund du Waal, and essays by Monica Miller and Georgia Haseldine, as well as complete installation photography of the exhibition and documentation of the artist's brand new film A Clay Sermon, this in-depth exploration of Gates' work is timely and relevant now in a world where a new generation are raising questions through making, identity and activism.
