Of course they run the risk of being unfavourably compared, or failing even to be seen! Especially now, when there are so many ways in which we view images. Most editorial is agendised in some shape or form: we create image systems for the purposes of selling what we don’t need. I rarely have an opportunity to work without servicing some commercial enterprise. So when I do, it’s (partly) driven by a belief that it will connect somehow somewhere, in the way that I connected to magazines in my formative years. There is the obvious unsolicited ‘come get me, but without the requisite demands: it’s like flinging yourself down a hill with no brakes. Obviously there can be consequences - there will always be the possibility of stumbling into the realms of the ridiculous - but I do it, stuck with the belief that pages can transmit and reach like minds, there’s capital in it.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe way in which Iggy describes his longing in ‘The Pure and the Damned’ has a hold on me; it reflects on the failed dream I still follow.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“\u003cem\u003eIt’s hard to say when photographing vintage clothes for fashion magazines began but, in my mind, it’s with Melanie Ward.
