AR technology expands the experience of each photograph using sound, 3D renderings and animation. Scanning a phone’s screen across the surface of each image brings it alive as pictures transform, push beyond their frame, or disappear. As told through the eyes of a fictional family, the hero of the story is an anonymous protagonist: a young European man who longs to journey from East to West. Set against the backdrop of great events that defined the era – WW1, WW2, the rise and fall of communism and sweeping political change – Puklus sets out to unravel the essence of collective memory and longing. Perhaps parts of our protagonist echo parts of Puklus himself, whose own experiences saw his family move geographically, from East to West, and politically, from right to left. Almost naturally then, \u003cem\u003eThe Epic Love Story of a Warrior\u003c\/em\u003e is a story told in reverse. From back to front and right to left, it begins in the present day, and works it’s way back across a century to 1918. Puklus’ photographs are almost always inspired by an arbitrary and seemingly disparate constellation of sources. The images and sculptures in \u003cem\u003eThe Epic Love Story of a Warrior\u003c\/em\u003e have been triggered by found pictures of historical events, memories, and objects. Retrieving these references, Puklus retreats into his studio, and transforms them into a visual language entirely his own. Here, he constructs a game of association for the reader. How much can he reduce the components of an image while we are still able to pinpoint the event it depicts? Iconic moments and memorable events are stripped back to a collection of still lives and small, deliberate gestures. The execution of Romania’s Antonescu is retold through a photograph of a single pole in the ground, a cluster of nails mark the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, and the looming iconographic shape of the empire state building is suggested in a bundle of wooden shards. Puklus’ references are art historical too, and as his camera moves around objects and nudes there are recurring nods towards the Bauhaus, avant-garde, Moholy-Nagy and the photographic tradition. As with all great stories, \u003cem\u003eThe Epic Love Story of a Warrior\u003c\/em\u003e takes time. It is Puklus’ definitive exploration of a slower, more cerebral form of storytelling. He imagines it as a novel and suggests it should be approached as such. In the aftermath, she combed through what remained, analyzing and photographing material and drawing it together in the form of a book. For a long time this building was the tallest on the island, housing western corporations and banks in its heyday. These days it remains, but it’s unoccupied now. The crowd at the market swelled and multiplied by sheer osmosis over the years, and swallowed the area into its throngs. Real estate developers say the House will remain unoccupied for as long as the market is unregulated. Here we find the paradox that so interested Vitturi – where his previous publication Dalston Anatomy surveyed gentrification killing off local business in London, in Lagos he found quite the opposite: gentrification in reverse.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eReturning to Lagos on many trips, Vitturi immersed himself into street market life and studied how the crowds merge into a frenetic, chaotic mass of bodies and objects. He photographed the things he saw – products, prayer mats, apparel – and the people he encountered – local shoppers, vendors and market stall owners. With most of the items on sale imported from China, he surveyed the extent of China’s economic hold on Africa within the context of the market. Through conversations with vendors, he learnt its status as a place people flock to, to make money. Edited by Holly Hay and Shonagh Marshall, Posturing celebrates aesthetic oddness, and in the process questions the essential function and meaning of a fashion image. It is a style of photography that rejects the hyper-sexualised body and celebrity-driven, glamour-obsessed vision of fashion that in the 2000s glorified naked consumerism. One that is changing traditional ideas of clothing, casting and images, as well as recontextualising what the body means to fashion, and what fashion can mean to the body. This is Waterhouse’s first major work since his Deutsche Borse Photography Prize winning project Ponte City. In institutions across Australia and Europe, archives encompassing thousands of colonial-era anthropological artefacts are now largely inaccessible, and images are often restricted to avoid showing pictures that infringe on Aboriginal cultural beliefs. With rules in place that mean only the descendants of people pictured can decide who is allowed to access them, much of the material remains unseen. Attitudes towards these images have changed since they were celebrated as a feat of anthropological photography by colonialists in the late 1800s, and now lingers an institutional uncertainty in how to approach the question of representation. In response, Waterhouse developed a collaborative venture in symbolically returning to the communities the agency over their own images. Spending several years taking pictures of them, he made prints and then returned, inviting the Warlpiri to paint the surfaces of the images and enact their own restrictions upon them using the traditional technique of dot painting. In intricate, colourful acrylic clusters they transformed the black and white depictions of themselves and their sacred sites.
