It took five months after I filmed them before I was able to really consider doing anything with this material. Together with an editor I worked on my sketches. Through this working process I came to understand what I wanted the film to convey. The film shows a sequence of several horses-some of them appearing twice. There is an incentive, you see them from being fairly awake to slowly becoming more and more at rest. In the short time span of about thirteen minutes I tried to make a rhythm focusing on the details of their movements as they slowly release their muscles, closing their eyes. The film also deals with the limits of the frame, as the horses move in and out of the frame as they fall asleep. The simplicity in the design resembles Shafran's approach to the museum spaces and moments.

Nigel Shafran has a perceptive eye for places and moments that are so familiar or unremarkable that their beauty often gets overlooked. He is not drawn to anything conventionally spectacular. He will not reinforce a polished and presentable corporate vision. But you can trust him to show you something lyrical, significant and revealing about places and people you think you know. Though his pictures are of the moment, and in the moment, half of his awareness is already concerned with posterity. As a result, his photographs are filled with acceptance, tenderness, gentle humour, and a little dose of melancholy. Shafran was commissioned in 2012 by the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) to make photographs for its annual review. He made images in the public galleries but was also given free access to backstage areas, places often in the process of transition or refurbishment. He spent months familiarizing himself with the location, and made many more images than were required for, or would even fit into, the annual review. In the short time since the photographs were made, some of the locations have remained comfortingly recognizable but others have now been transformed into new galleries, offices or stores. Many of the ‘outtakes’ were just too good not to be seen. And so, a selection of prints was acquired for the Museum’s permanent collection and others are reproduced here. I like the fact that Shafran approached one of the world’s greatest museums with the same democracy of vision that he has applied in previous projects to stacks of washing up in his home, or to the contents of his father’s garage. His photographs are quietly attentive, seeking out the evocative spaces between the obvious and the illustrative. He is attuned to the subtleties of light, and attracted to the details of the everyday: assemblages of objects seen as ready-made still life compositions or unintentional sculptures, and reflective moments of human interaction. Here, we see staff paused at work, preparatory areas of exhibition installation, behind-the-scenes services and the varied demographic of visitors pausing in their journeys through the labyrinthine galleries. There are honest and recognizable moments: a tray of used crockery on an empty table in the café, or groups of teenagers on an educational visit. Shafran’s photographs offer a glimpse into the many roles adopted by the museum and provide a candid representation of museum life. He has distilled an intuitive narrative through careful sequencing, interpreting through his own distinctive vision the spaces and people that make up the V&A. When it opened in the 1850s, the Museum’s first director, Henry Cole stated: ‘This museum will be like a book that is open and not shut’. Includes a fold-out insert, an essay by Anna Stothart, and a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the series. The photography series featured Prager’s newest film, La Grande Sortie, in its US premiere, along with a new series of photographs shot on location during the film’s production in Paris. In this body of work, the viewer is confronted with the dual perspectives of performer and audience and asked to consider the underlying tension inherent in this relationship. In her film La Grande Sortie (2015; 10 minutes), commissioned by the Paris Opera Ballet and debuted in September 2015 on its digital platform 3ème Scène, Prager tells the story of a prima ballerina, played by French Étoile (star) dancer Émilie Cozette. The film’s score, sampled from Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring,” was composed by Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, with choreography created in collaboration with the Paris Opera Ballet, adapted from Creative Director Benjamin Millipied’s iconic piece, Amoveo. Shot in the renowned Ópera Bastille, the setting is opening night of Cozette’s return to the stage after an unexplained hiatus. The performance is fraught with the dancer’s stage fright and the indifferent and hostile reactions that escalate in the audience. Cozette’s fears manifest in a series of awkward dances, each accompanied by a boorish audience member—played by a mix of retired Paris Opera Ballet dancers and dance teachers—who are magically transported from their seat to the stage. Culminating in a fantastical vanishing act, La Grande Sortie embodies a universal anxiety around performance and success that many people struggle with on a daily basis. The photography series delved further into the dynamics between artist and viewer through the opposing lens of performer and audience. Given the vantage point of the performer looking out onto the audience, the viewer is forced to be the focus of self-conscious awareness, and must interpret the variety of expressions of the theatergoers that range from boredom and judgment to concentration and enjoyment. An audio recording of ambient theater crowd noise played on a loop further heightens this illusion.

Shafran’s photographs evoke this sentiment. They are an invitation to delve in and an example of how the museum has continued to act as a source of creative inspiration. - Martin Barnes, Senior Curator, Photographs at Victoria and Albert Museum, London

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1415/5034/products/160628_5873_8851034a-10ec-45df-a005-60b429c3b694.jpg?v=1571703941
raster-by-yukihito-kono-signed
RASTER by Yukihito Kono [SIGNED]

Raster is an experimental piece of work by Yukihito Kono which consists of the repetition of portraits of his partner taken in the morning of a day of journey they had in Japan. Consist of 365 silver gelatin prints in this series, the artist recorded the highest and lowest local Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) readings at noon daily and translated the data into corresponding exposure timings on the enlarger in a traditional darkroom. This work recollects Ang’s experience with the discomfort and unease of reduced and affected visibility - a result of conditions in human’s continuous bid to control, intervene and manipulate landscapes and environment aligned to narrow-minded agendas. At some point along the way, I decided to act upon a brief impulse of escaping to Norway for a road trip and ended up staying on for nine days. Was my decision motivated by the insatiable concept of desire itself? I remember the trip now, weeks later, through a set of polaroids and a couple hundred photographs. My memory however, only exists in fragments – comprising of brief moments of lucidity and never in its entirety. Curiously, memory functions much like desire, in a sense, both feeds on itself. John Berger explains, “Memory is not unilinear at all. Memory works radially, that is to say with an enormous number of associations leading to the same event.” Layers refer to the layers within our nonlinear memory. When we re-remember something, it alters in its state and becomes different every time we go back to it. At times we comprehend the clarity that it presents and other times a faded ephemeral existence beyond recognition, acknowledging the impermanence of memory and being aware of that disconnection.

There are a total of 5 negatives in the book and each negative (except one) was printed multiple times. Together they reveal a way of life that challenges the mainstream, suggesting different narratives for the future and contributing to our collective imagination.

REVIEW: SETTLEMENTS by Toshimitsu Aono（Editor in Chief of Spectator）

The book takes its name from the fabulously kitsch bright pink plastic flamingo designed by Don Featherstone in 1957 and Latham says “I saw the flamingo almost as a parody of the American flag. Since then hundreds of thousands of settlers, missionaries, farmers and gold seekers have trampled across the trail from Missouri to Oregon in search of a better life. Latham first learned about the trail as a kid, while playing an educational video game where you had to take your family safely across the trail without any of them dying. I wanted to photograph the people who lived along the trail almost as if they were the ancestors of the people who didn’t make it to Oregon. I was interested in this idea of travelling west as a metaphor for the hope that things will get better. […] The Midwest is talked about in terms of ‘the flyover states.’ A lot the people I met were facing financial uncertainty – people who lived in motels, some who lived in cars, hitchhikers, people who were in between jobs, who’d started a new family; all of them were, I felt, a good representation of where America was then. There’s this phrase, which I loathe, but it does sum it up: ‘the failure of the American dream’. Between 2016 and 2017 Shafran approached vulnerable people living on the street in London and Paris, and asked them to take his photograph. The resulting series is presented unedited, in a chronological sequence with a record of each person’s name and location. This uncomfortable publication has been produced by Shafran in response to the current homelessness crisis: the number of rough sleepers in London has doubled since 2010, with official government data showing that on any given night in autumn last year, 4,571 people were recorded sleeping on the streets. Often pictured in transient urban landscapes, the photographs reflect on the unacknowledged comings and goings of pedestrians and passers-by as seen from the view of the person taking the picture. Some of the images create poignant juxtapositions of poverty and extreme wealth, set against the backdrop of visible luxury commerce, such as in the images taken on The Strand, a street known historically as the home of rough sleepers and people down on their luck. Through this project, Shafran questions the condition of homelessness that is seen through the frame of the other, where often in photographs homeless people are shown as victims – breaking down the distance between ‘us’ and ‘them.’ All proceeds from the sale of the book will go to homeless charities.

‘Evidences’ is a curated collection of photos taken over a period of five years. During the selection of photos from the archive, I came to realize the common threads of the abstract and the descriptive, the photographic and the plastic, and the natural and the technological intersects. With these 79 photographs, Suffo Moncloa constructs a meditative journey, a multifaceted dialogue between images based on decontextualized language, with evocations from form, colour, implied mystery, and the inherent power of the image itself. The collection’s narratives deal directly with the elements that make up our world, but also with the idea of creating a timeless image. It includes evidences from the working process, dark room experimentation, and reconstruction. The idea of materiality becomes central; capturing moments when a vision can be transformed into an object, or something else. The object becomes permanent (in a relative sense). Combinations of those moments are capable to form realities and fictions belonging to our personal universe.

This is a set of 4 Postcards (DINA5) from my new work, WIESE GARTEN BAUM + ELBE (ROSA) - THE PINK RIVER.
