In creating these works Jäger has assembled a huge stock of images of buildings and environments, both her own photographs and images found in print and online, including rendered as well as completed constructions. ‘Topographies’, which is created in collaboration with Winfried Heininger, consists of one, extremely long, accordion-folded image created from hundreds of collaged images from this working archive. \u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eTopographies\u003c\/em\u003e reproduces the nearly 12 meter long collage one-to-one. The reader can turn the pages to follow the image, as if with a filmic tracking shot, or they can open the publication to its full extent and examine it in a less linear fashion. Whichever way they view it, the route is through man-made, forested and barren landscapes, some sites iconic, some prototypical, with an emphasis on the architectural ambitions of the 1960s. Our viewpoint moves from afar, to close up, the scenes largely in black and white with accents of colour that emphasise the chill of the dystopian environments. With few signs of human life, Jäger captures the temporality of the most solid concrete and steel buildings. Like the fictional visions of Cormac McCarthy, this could be a past we have escaped or a future we would like to avoid. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnother landscape running along the back of the image that also frames the collage complements Jäger’s: a dazzle pattern. Dazzle is a form of camouflage used principally in World War I that works on the principle of applying a bold graphic pattern to an object so that discerning its contours becomes difficult, particularly when the object is in motion. The pattern used for ‘Topographies’ was created by recording forms generated by applying such a pattern to a fictional, rendered landscape. The result is a structure that is impossible to read, which irritates the eye. Bleeding over onto the front of the image, it is one of several factors that destabilise the reading of the landscape. Whatever I discovered, observed or ignored, influenced my next observation. The longer I was on the road, the more the qualities and materials of this country burned into my photography. I deliberately reduced the preparations for this trip to Japan to the essentials, to be able to throw an unbiased view of the country. With great attention I moved by train, boat, car and by foot between cities and villages as well as on bigger and smaller islands. The focus of my interest was predominantly architecture. In Japan there are still many traditional houses. The basic requirement of Japanese architecture is on one hand in balance with nature and on the other hand for protection against natural disasters. Houses are protected against the weather with bamboo, stone walls and thick thatched roofs. An interesting example of this are the folk houses, called Kura houses, which have a specific Japanese wall design: a white grid pattern on black slate. Material and structure protect the house from rain and wind and prevent the spread of fire. What seems aesthetically pleasing to the Western eye has a functional significance for the Japanese. They both came into being at a time when civilization was in a state of collapse, and they both exemplify the idea of the liberating power of art and culture. Looking at them in parallel brings out their similarities and differences and reveals that to some extent they serve to complement one another: for the one, the focus is on mass-produced articles and their everyday usage; the idea of universalism; and the design of consumer goods; for the other, encounters with unique artworks; the experience of diversity; and the critiquing of capitalist consumerism. Working by and large without any digital computation technology, Frei Otto used a delicate suspended model to design the complex roof: modelling, drawing, and measurement techniques formed the basis for a creative culture of experimentation that involved an ongoing calibration of hand and eye, of scientific observation and technical skill―a form of manual and intellectual self-alignment, in which the process of conceptualization also succeeded in triggering a collective discourse on the future of society.
